MONTREAL – A three-eyed Raven proved to be too much to handle as a trio of Carleton players recorded double digit performances en route to a 59-47 victory over McGill in women's preseason basketball at Love Competition Hall, Saturday.
It was Carleton's fourth straight victory over McGill since the Martlets pulled off a stunning 66-60 upset in a 2017 national championship semifinal at Victoria, B.C.
Carleton, which improved to 7-3, extended its win streak to four since dropping a 74-58 contest to Calgary on Oct. 10. The Martlets dropped to 4-5.
McGill was outscored in all but one quarter. The visitors led 22-11 after the opening stanza, 36-22 at halftime and 47-32 after three. McGill had a 15-12 edge in the final frame.
Madison Reid tallied a team-high 14 points, while teammates
Alyssa Cerino and
Marlee Ball added 12 and 11 points, respectively. Reid, a 5-foot-10 psychology major from Lanark County, Ont., added three assists, three steals and a pair of rebounds in 25 minutes of court time.
Nadege Pluviose, a 5-foot-10 forward from Montreal, led McGill with 10 points off the bench, adding six rebounds, and three assists in 25 minutes of action. The first-year transfer from Robert Morris University shot 4-for-6 from the field.
Senior
Geraldine Cabillo-Abante of St. Laurent, Que., added nine points for McGill while freshman
Maddie Colpitts of Fredericton, N.B., had eight.
The Martlets bench outscored Carleton's subs by a 24-10 margin. Joining Pluviose and Colpitts was sophomore
Shayann Laguerre from Laval, Que., with six points.
The two teams combined for only 22 personal fouls (14 by Carleton) and 14 trips to the free-throw line (six by McGill).
Carleton shot 42.3 per cent from the floor (22/52), 50.0 from beyond the arc (12/24) and 37.5 from the free-throw line (3/8) compared to McGill, which shot 37.8 (14/45), drained nine of 25 treys and made four of six attempts from the line.
The Ravens (7-3) will open their OUA season at home to Waterloo (1-5) on Nov. 1, while McGill (4-5) concludes its preseason stateside on Nov. 3 when they play the Maine Black Bears (0-0) at the Cross Insurance Centre. That game will follow a men's matchup between the same schools, in what is believed will be the first-ever McGill road doubleheader against an NCAA team.
