Maine Black Bears overpower Martlets in battle of mammals

BANGOR, ME – Blanca Millan, a native of Spain, scored a game-high 20 points as the University of Maine overwhelmed McGill 61-22 in a women's basketball exhibition game at Cross Insurance Center, Sunday.

The result is believed to be the Martlets lowest offensive output in the post-1970 era. Although records are incomplete, the lowest points total in the books appears to be a 47-27 loss to Laval on Nov. 7, 2003.

Maine, which fielded a much taller lineup with nine players listed at 5-foot-11 or taller, was McGill's first and only NCAA Div. 1 opposition this season. The Martlets roster includes only five players at that height. Their last NCAA encounter dates back to Aug. 29, 2017 in a 68-66 win against Iona College.

Maine took a commanding 26-9 lead after the opening quarter.  After McGill found the scoreboard for its first bucket of the day with 6:12 left in the quarter, Maine answered with a 7-0 sprint and held a 38-14 advantage into halftime. The Black Bears put their foot back on the gas in the third quarter, outscoring the visitors 16-2, including a 16-1 run to start the quarter. They took a knee in the final stanza, edging McGill 7-6.

Maine held a 41-32 edge in rebounds and a 10-4 margin in steals. McGill committed 17 turnovers to 11 by the Black Bears.

Millan, who shot 7-for-10 from the field, was one of two Black Bears to reach double figures in scoring. She was joined by junior guard Dor Saar (13 pts) of Israel. Ten of Maine's 12 players who saw action recorded a bucket as the Black Bears featured a balanced scoring attack.

Four Martlets tied for the team scoring lead with only four points apiece, including NCAA transfers Nadege Pluviose and Shayann Laguerre, along with freshmen Maddy Colpitts and Jessica Salanon.

Rounding out their scoring, with two points apiece, was Gladys Hakizimana, Ruth Tshikudi-Tshila and Amelie Rochon.

Maine shot 44.2 per cent over the game (23/52) and sunk 7-of-26 attempts from beyond the arc. McGill connected on just 18.3 per cent from the floor (9/49) and hit only 1-of-17 attempts from downtown. The hosts converted 8-of-14 at the free-throw department while McGill made only six trips to the line and came away with points on just 50 per cent of them.

The Martlets concluded their preseason schedule with a 4-6 record while Maine improved to 2-0. McGill begins the RSEQ regular campaign Nov. 7 at Love Competition Hall against Laval. Maine plays Delaware in its NCAA opener, Nov. 8.
