Surprising Sherbrooke squad sinks Martlet volleyballers

SHERBROOKE, QUE -- Claire Vercheval scored a game-high 21.5 points but it was insufficient as Sherbrooke surprised the visiting McGill Martlets 3-1 in women's volleyball, Saturday. The set scores were 25-20, 25-18, 15-25 and 25-18.

McGill, which finished first last year and was considered to be a preseason favourite to win the Quebec conference, has now dropped three straight games after winning their season opener against Laval. The result was the first win of the season for Sherbrooke (1-3).

Most of the numbers seemed to be in the Martlets favour, including an edge in kills (43-40), digs (63-46) and assists (42-37). The Vert & Or had a slight upper hand in aces (10-8) and stuff blocks (4-3).

Catherine Lavigne and Maude Frechette paced the winning side with 13.5 and 13 points, respectively.

Vercheval racked up 19 kills in a losing cause, to go along with a pair of service aces, one assisted block and eight digs.

Joining her in double digits was Elisabeth Perrault, a senior power-hitter from Laval, Que., who tallied 12 points on nine kills and three aces. She also contributed five digs.

The momentum seemed to shift in Sherbrooke's favour when McGill lost starting setter Andreanne Tremblay of Longueuil, Que., in the first set. She was struck in the cheek with the ball and was kept out of the remainder of the game for precautionary reasons. Tremblay was replaced on the court by rookie Audrey Trottier, a kinesiology freshman, also from from Longueuil, who registered solid game-highs in assists (33) and digs 14), to go along with one ace.

The Martlets will have an immediate chance to avenge the setback when they host Sherbrooke on Friday, Nov. 1 at 6:30 p.m. in Love Competition Hall.
