MONTREAL -- Junior
Sean Tan of Kensington, Maryland, came off the bench to score a game-high four goals and sophomore
Carter Schultz of Burlington, Ont., added three as McGill clobbered Carleton 20-4 in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association action at rain-drenched Percival Molson Memorial Stadium, Tuesday.
It was McGill's highest offensive outburst since a 20-6 decision over Nipissing on Sept. 9, 2017.
McGill, which rested 22 veterans including four co-captains, improved to 9-0 atop the CUFLA East Division with one game remaining before playoffs, while Carleton dropped to 0-8. McGill now turns its sights on their season finale against Trent (8-1) in Peterborough, Ont. The first-place showdown is slated for Saturday (Oct. 26) at 2 p.m.
The home team had a 32-7 advantage in shots. They took a 5-1 lead after the opening period, improved that to 8-2 at the half and 15-4 after three quarters, then outscored the Ravens 5-0 in the final frame.
The two hat-tricks give McGill a total of 13 in nine games.
Tan, a six-foot, 170-pound attackman, added an assist for a five-point soiree. The 21-year-old electrical engineering junior tallied the game-winner with 2:50 remaining in the first quarter. He added a pair in the third and one more in the final period.
"We showed off our depth tonight," said McGill head coach
Tim Murdoch. "I gave Tan the game ball. He is a hard worker, a strong athlete, and a very positive young man. I told the team after the game that he epitomizes the type of strong character and positive winning culture that our McGill team has established this season."
A dozen players were inscribed on the scoresheet, including two apiece from
Scotty Bauer,
Evan Reynolds and
Jon Uysal.
Single goals were scored by
Ian Macleod,
Cougar Kirby,
Christopher Parkinson,

Freshman goalie
Joseph Boehm started and saved two of four shots to collect his first career win. He was relieved at halftime by sophomore
Steven Pelliccione who allowed two goals on three shots.
At the other end of the field,

McGill won 15 of 25 face-offs, led by

Quentin Norris (8/14).

Whichever team wins Saturday's showdown in Peterborough will win the CUFLA Eastern pennant and a two-game bye into the semifinal round of the CUFLA's Baggataway Cup national championship in Montreal, Nov. 8-10.
A McGill (9-0) victory against Trent (8-1) would give them an undefeated season heading into a national semifinal at Percival Molson Stadium. An Excalibur victory would force a tie atop the standings and Trent would hold the tie-breaker, based on point-differential over the entire season. McGill won the first meeting between these great rivals with an 8-7 decision in double overtime at home on Sept. 14.
If Trent loses on Saturday, they would have to play a qualifying game on Nov. 2 to earn a berth at Nationals. If McGill loses, they would bypass the qualifying round as the host team but would need to play a national quarter-final on Nov. 8 against the third-place finisher in the CUFLA West, likely Guelph (6-4) or Toronto (5-4).
McGill has won the CUFLA East pennant in six of the last seven years (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017) and finished second to Trent in 2018.
McGILL MURMURS: The single-game school record for most goals in league play was set in a 27-0 victory over Concordia on Oct. 16, 2014. That broke the previous McGill mark set in a 25-3 win over Laurentian, Sept. 15, 2007. McGill did have one better offensive performance in non-conference play with a 33-3 decision over the New Brunswick Selects on Oct. 7, 2006. The CUFLA record for most goals in a regular season contest is held by Brock, who defeated Laurier 33-3 on Sept. 7, 2014.
