Geraldine Cabillo-Abante and
Nadege Pluviose each registered nine points as McGill defeated York 62-45 in the opening round of the Darcel Wright Memorial Classic women's basketball tournament, Friday, at Ryerson's Coca-Cola Court.
It was McGill's third consecutive victory over York, including a 70-45 decision last year and a 61-49 decision in 2012.
McGill held a 14-9 lead after the first quarter and a 31-18 edge at halftime. Each team scored 11 points in the third quarter before McGill took the final stanza 20-16.
Robitaille, who hails from Longueuil, Que., was 3-for-6 in both field goals and three-pointers
Cabillo-Abante, a 5-foot-5 senior guard from St. Laurent, Que., was 3-for-6 from the field and shot 2-for-3 in free-throws. The physical education major leads McGill in preseason scoring with 49 points in five games.
Pluviose, a native Montrealer, was 4-for-11 from the floor and had five steals.
Forward
Lauren Golding of Windsor, Ont., led York's offence with 14 points. She shot 6-for-14 from the floor six, 1-for-5 from the arc and only missed one of two shots from the free-throw line.
Overall, McGill shot 36 per cent from the floor (24/66), 28 from beyond the arc (7/25) and 78 from the free-throw line (7/9). York shot 36 per cent (15/42), sunk three of 16 treys and made 12 of 17 attempts from the line.
The three-day tournament continues Saturday. York (4-3) plays Windsor in the consolation round while McGill (2-3) will meet Saskatchewan in a 7 p.m semifinal.
