Huskies outpace Martlets in Darcel Wright tourney semifinal

TORONTO -- Four Huskies reached double-digits in scoring as Saskatchewan rallied from an early 10-point deficit to defeat McGill 67-46 in the semifinal round of the Darcel Wright Memorial Classic, a women's basketball tournament played on Saturday, at Ryerson's Coca-Cola Court.

McGill led 17-9 after the opening quarter but then the wheels fell of their game. Saskatchewan outscored the Martlets 18-9, 20-9 and 20-11 over the final three quarters, respectively.

Saskatchewan was on the beneficial end of a 24-15 advantage in personal fouls, resulting in 25 trips to the foul line, where they drained 21 points. McGill made only 11 trips to the charity stripe and came away with seven points.

McGill head coach Ryan Thorne did not appear happy with some of the calls and drew back-to-back technical fouls, resulting in his automatic ejection with 6:22 remaining in the fourth quarter. The Huskies capitalized immediately with three different players combining on a 4-for-4 performance at the line during that stoppage to take a 62-37 lead.

Sabine Dukate and Libby Epoch paced the Huskies attack with a dozen points each, while teammates Summer Masikewich and Carly Ahlstrom added 10 apiece.

McGill only had one player in double figures, wthj Nadege Pluviose, a first-year NCAA transfer, collecting 10 points. Geraldine Cabillo-Abante and Gladys Hakizimana added eight points apiece and Sirah Diarra contributed six points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

McGill, which dropped to 1-1 in the tourney and 2-4 overall in preseason play, will confront UBC in Sunday's bronze medal game.
