Windsor wins squeaker over McGill hockey squad

WINDSOR, Ont – Sophomore Ethan Skinner of Kincardine, Ont., scored the game-winner and collected an assist as Windsor defeated McGill 3-1 in a rare inter-divisional OUA men's hockey game at Capri Pizzeria Recreation Centre, Saturday.

After not crossing paths for two seasons, it was the second encounter in 48 hours between the sides with McGill winning the previous day's duel by an identical score.

McGill dropped to 1-2-1 in OUA East standings while the Lancers improved to 2-1-0 in the OUA West.

Windsor headed into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead courtesy of a John Wesley goal just 75 seconds before the end of the period, They never trailed after that.

Skinner – the only Lancer to score in the previous game – was credited with a shorthanded marker at 9:49 of the second period to double the lead. He had dumped the puck in on McGilll rookie goaltender Emanuel Vella, who registered 24 saves in his OUA debut. However, the 6-foot-4 native of Toronto misplayed the bouncing puck and accidentally knocked it into his own net.

Skinner now has four goals in three games, just two shy of his freshman season total.

Despite outshooting Windsor 32-27 overall, including a combined 25-13 margin over the last two periods, McGill was kept off the scoresheet until defenceman Dominic Talbot-Tassi connected just 53 seconds into the final stanza. It was the first goal of the season for the fifth-year mining engineering senior. Ryan Penny and Guillaume Gauthier were credited with assists on the play.

Vella was pulled for an extra attacker in the final two minutes but the move backfired when Ben Assad of Calgary, tucked away an empty-netter six seconds before the final whistle.

McGill failed to reproduce the power-play magic of the night before, going 0-for-7 while Windsor was 0-for-4 for a second consecutive game.

Windsor goalie Jonathan Reinhart faced McGill for a second-straight night and made 31 saves to earning his second win of the season.

Both teams are back in action on Oct. 18. McGill (1-2-1) returns to McConnell Arena to host Waterloo at 7 p.m. while Windsor (2-1-0)  visits Lakehead in Thunder Bay..
