Gauthier great as hockey Warriors meet their Waterloo at McGill

MONTREAL – Senior Guillaume Gauthier of Ste. Marthe sur le Lac, Que., scored twice and registered one assist as McGill walloped Waterloo 6-1 in OUA men's hockey, Friday, at McConnell Arena.

McGill improved to 2-2-1 while Waterloo dropped to 1-2-1. McGill's lifetime record against the Warriors now stands at 16-18-3 since the teams first met in 1964. It was their largest  margin of victory against Waterloo since a 7-1 result on Nov. 12, 2016.

McGill, which had a 38-28 advantage in shots, never trailed. The hosts led 2-1 after the opening period and 5-1 after two.

McGill opened the scoring when junior forward Alex Renaud netted his first of the season at 8:53 of the opening period. But Waterloo tallied the equalizer less than two minutes later, courtesy of Zac Coulter.

However, Gauthier's power-play marker at 16:40 – his first of the evening – restored McGill's lead at 2-1 heading into the first intermission.

That was the closest the Warriors came as McGill opened the floodgates in the second period. Starting at 4:25 and striking at roughly five minute intervals, Jasmin Boutet, Michael Cramarossa and Harlan Orr each tallied to put the game out of reach. It was Boutet's and Orr's first goals this season and Cramarossa's second. Boutet, who also collected an assist, was ejected at 16:51 of the second period for a check-to-the head major and will have to serve an automatic one-game suspension.

Gauthier then delivered the final death knell at 15:45 of the third. The 5-foot-10, 200-pound left winger leads McGill in scoring with points, including three goals, in five OUA regular season games.

McGill went 1-for-3 on the power-play and erased all four shorthanded situations. McGill's penalty kill has now killed off 12 consecutive penalties over the last three games, not allowing a goal since the overtime winner in a 3-2 loss at Concordia on Oct. 5.

Senior McGill netminder Louis-Philip Guindon of St. Joseph du Lac, Que., turned aside 27 of 28 shots to even his record at 2-2, while Warriors' Julian Sime was beaten six times on 38 shots and dropped to 0-2.

Both teams are back on the ice again Saturday. McGill (2-2-1) hosts the Laurier Golden Hawks (0-3-1) at McConnell Arena at 7 p.m., while Waterloo (1-2-1) visits Concordia (2-2-0) at the Ed Meagher Arena.
