Rams too tough for Martlets in college hoops

MONTREAL – Point guard Marin Scotten of Ottawa, Ont., scored a game-high 25 points as Ryerson defeated the McGill women's basketball team 68-55 in preseason play at Love Competition Hall, Thursday.

The result snapped McGill's two-game win streak over Ryerson, as the Martlets dropped to 0-2. Ryerson, which defeated Victoria 90-83 last Saturday, improved to 2-0.

The Rams led 8-7 after the first quarter and 21-14 at halftime but the result was decided in a wild second half which produced over 70 per cent of the scoring. McGill mounted a valiant third-quarter comeback, outscoring its opponent 32-18 and taking a 46-39 lead. But Ryerson opened a shooting gallery of its own in the final stanza, with a dominating 29-9 advantage on the scoreboard.

Scotten was among three Rams to reach double figures, a group that included Jama Bin-Edward, who notched a dozen points, and Hayley Robertson with 10.

Senior Geraldine Cabillo-Abante led McGill's offence for a second consecutive game with 14 points. The 5-foot-5 guard from St. Laurent, Que., shot 5-for-9 from the floor, and 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. She added four rebounds, two steals and one assist.

Other leading scorers for the Martlets included NCAA transfer Nadege Pluviose (13) and Charlotte Clayton, who had six points and tied Sirah Diarra for the team lead in rebounds with seven.

Point-guard Gladys Hakizimana returned to the McGill lineup after missing the season-opening Queen's game last week with an undisclosed injury. She didn't start but played 13 minutes and tallied two points, both on free-throws, to go along with two rebounds and a pair of assists.

The Rams shot 39.3 per cent from the floor (24/61), 35.7 from three-point range (10/28) and drained 10 of 12 free-throws. The Martlets shot 31.7 per cent from the field (19/60), 29.2 from beyond the arc (7/24) and went 10-for-14 from the line.

The Martlets had a 38-32 edge in rebounding but lost the turnover battle 23-18.

McGill's (0-2) will have less than 24 hours rest before continuing their preseason schedule on Friday (Oct. 11) at 2 p.m. when the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves visit Love Competition Hall for a 2 p.m. tip-off.

Ryerson (2-0) continues its Montreal road-trip with back-to-back games at Concordia and UQAM on Oct. 11-12, respectively.
