Charlotte Clayton of Newmarket, Ont., tallied a game-high 23 points as McGill rallied from an early 12-point deficit to snare the visiting University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves 64-55 in a women's preseason basketball matinee at Love Competition Hall, Friday.
It was the first meeting ever between these two clubs and the inaugural win of the new season McGill, which improved to 1-2.
UNBC jumped into a 20-8 lead and went ahead 20-12 after the opening quarter byt McGill took control the rest of the way, The Martlets outscored the visitors 24-15 in the second quarter, 9-7 in the third and 19-13 in the final period.
Clayton, a 5-foot-8 guard, was only two points shy of a career high. The 20-year-old pharmacology junior shot 9-for-18 from the floor, including a 5-for-11 performance from three-point range. She also pulled down six rebounds to go along with a pair of steals, one blocked shot and an assist.
The only Martlet to join her in double figures was
GG Cabillo-Abante, with 10 points. Other top-scoring teammates included
Gladys Hakizimana (9) and
Sirah Diarra (6 pts, 8 rbs).
Leading the way for UNBC was the duo of
Madison Landry and
Maria Mongomo, who tallied 15 points apiece.
McGill had a 36-27 edge in rebounds and a 3-1 margin in blocked shot. Both sides committed 19 turnovers.
The Martlets shot 39.3 per cent from the floor (24/61), 35.5 from the arc (11/31) and drained five of six from the line. The Timberwolves shot 35.0 from the field (21/60), wnet 6-for-30 from downtown and 7-for-13 from the line.
McGill (1-2) will host a well-seasoned Ottawa Gee-Gees (10-3) squad on Saturday (Oct. 12) at 2 p.m.
