Clayton clicks as Martlets snare Timberwolves to snap two-game skid

MONTREAL -- Charlotte Clayton of Newmarket, Ont., tallied a game-high 23 points as McGill rallied from an early 12-point deficit to snare the visiting University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves 64-55 in a women's preseason basketball matinee at Love Competition Hall, Friday.

It was the first meeting ever between these two clubs and the inaugural win of the new season McGill, which improved to 1-2.

UNBC jumped into a 20-8 lead and went ahead 20-12 after the opening quarter byt McGill took control the rest of the way, The Martlets outscored the visitors 24-15 in the second quarter, 9-7 in the third and 19-13 in the final period.

Clayton, a 5-foot-8 guard, was only two points shy of a career high. The 20-year-old pharmacology junior shot 9-for-18 from the floor, including a 5-for-11 performance from three-point range. She also pulled down six rebounds to go along with a pair of steals, one blocked shot and an assist.

The only Martlet to join her in double figures was GG Cabillo-Abante, with 10 points. Other top-scoring teammates included Gladys Hakizimana (9) and Sirah Diarra (6 pts, 8 rbs).

Leading the way for UNBC was the duo of Madison Landry and Maria Mongomo, who tallied 15 points apiece.

McGill had a 36-27 edge in rebounds and a 3-1 margin in blocked shot. Both sides committed 19 turnovers.

The Martlets shot 39.3 per cent from the floor (24/61), 35.5 from the arc (11/31) and drained five of six from the line. The Timberwolves shot 35.0 from the field (21/60), wnet 6-for-30 from downtown and 7-for-13 from the line.

McGill (1-2) will host a well-seasoned Ottawa Gee-Gees (10-3) squad on Saturday (Oct. 12) at 2 p.m.
