MONTREAL -- Sophomore midfielder Ramzi Saim of Ile-Bizard, Que., connected on a free-kick in the 69th minute as McGill rallied for a 1-1 draw with the division-leading UQAM Citadins in RSEQ men's soccer at Stade Saputo, Friday.

It was the first blemish on UQAM's record, which now stands at 2-0-1, good enough for a one-point lead over second-place Concordia (2-0-0) but the Stingers hold a game in hand. It was also a much-need shot in the arm for McGill (0-1-2), still looking for their first win. The contest was a spirited affair that featured 31 fouls, 16 of which were called against the Redmen.

McGill started great but it was the Citadins who opened the scoring in the 62nd minute when Laurent Palacio-Tellier hit paydirt on a howitzer from 25 yards out. But Saim evened the count just seven minutes later on a free-kick from the 20-yard marker. The 6-foot-1, 183-pound finance major fired a perfectly-place shot which ricocheted off the ground on the opposite side of the wall of defenders.

"It was a gritty performance," said McGill bench boss Marc Mounicot. "We had a very good start but ran into some bad luck. We hit the post very early, then had a goal disallowed in the second minute when the goalpost moved just before Chris Flores put the ball in the net.

"Tying the game so quickly after UQAM took the lead showed resilience and good team spirit."

The Redmen had a slight 7-6 edge in shots on net but both goalkeepers were equal to the task. McGill sophomore Theo Farineau, who was assessed a yellow card in the 39th minute, was credited with five saves for the tie. UQAM 'keeper Valentin Lamoulie made six saves of his own to merit the deadlock for his troops.

McGill will now turn their focus on Wednesday's upcoming contest against UQTR in a battle of winless teams at Percival Molson Stadium. The Patriotes sit sixth in the seven-team Quebec league with a 0-1-1 record.Kickoff is slated for 8:45 p.m., following the women's game.
