MONTREAL --
Thomas Mienkowski of Toronto struck out nine batters as visiting McGill cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Université de Montréal in Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association play, Thursday, at Parc Ahuntsic.
The result extended McGill's win streak to 30 league and playoff games, and 29 in regular season play dating back to the 2016 campaign.
The Redmen, who had a 10-8 advantage in hits, led UdeM from start to finish, moving ahead 2-0 after the first inning, then adding three in the fourth to pull ahead 5-1 before scoring two more in the seventh.
Mienkowski, an imposing 6-foot-3, 205-pound righthander, scattered five hits over five innings and allowed just one earned run. A 20-year-old economics junior out of St. Michael's School, he walked three batters and hit one. He threw 93 pitches, including 58 for strikes.
He was relieved by southpaw
Zach Salsburg of Oakland, Calif., and righty
Cole Millinger of West Windsor, N.J., who both tossed one inning of scoreless relief.
Shortstop
Troy Shepherd, third-baseman
Michael O'Toole and catcher
Emerson Dohn paced the Redmen offence with two hits apiece. Shepherd, an arts sophomore from Boston, who was batting second, went 2-for-2 with a double and one run scored. O'Toole, an 18-year-old arts freshman from Vancouver, B.C., was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Dohm, a history senior from West Vancouver, was 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and one run scored.
Teammate
Jake Guggenheimer, an economics junior from Great Nek, N.Y., was 0-for-3 at the plate but collected a pair of RBIs.
Starter
Antoine Beaudoin took the loss for Montreal. He lasted only three and a third innings, allowing eight hits and five runs while striking out two, walking one and throwing one wild pitch.
Leading the UdeM offence was
Ludovic DuFour, who was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
McGill will put their two win streaks on the line in the nation's capital on Saturday (Sept. 8) when they confront the Carleton Ravens at RGCT Park in a doubleheader slated to begin at 12 noon. The Redmen will stay overnight to play a doubleheader with ottawa on Sunday. The Gee-Gees were the last team to defeat McGill in regular season play, posting a 7-4 home-field decision on Sept. 10, 2016.
