Ravens ruffle Redmen, snap McGill baseball win streak at 30

OTTAWA -- Derek Harkin tossed a complete game four-hitter as Carleton exploded for four runs in the sixth inning en route to snapping McGill's two-year, 30-game win streak with a 5-1 victory in the opener of a Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association doubleheader at RGCT Park on Saturday afternoon.

It was the first Redmen loss in league or playoff action since a 3-1 setback to Saint Mary's at the 2016 CCBA national championship (Oct. 28/16). The result also halted a 29-game regular season win streak for McGill, dating back to a 7-4 loss at Ottawa on Sept. 10, 2016. The Redmen, however, still have a current 21-game win streak at home in regular season play, since suffering a 6-2 loss to Montreal on Sept. 14, 2015.

Harkin allowed one run in his seven innings of work, striking out five, walking one and hitting Henry Dennis -- his mound opponent. Dennis, who also pitched a complete game, returned the favour by hitting Harkin. The McGill starter gave up six hits, struck out six and walked none in six innings of work but was the victim of five unearned runs as his side committee two costly errors.

The game was tied at 1-1 with Carleton batting in the bottom of the sixth when Ethan Diamandas stroked an RBI-single on a 3-1 count, to spark a four-run rally. John Kalvas, the next batter, was hit by a pitch to load the bases and pinch-hitter Bryce Mcrae grounded out to score one run. Then Jake Surret hit a two-run single to give the Ravens a comfortable four-run cushion.

McGill attempted a two-out rally in the top of the seventh when Camden Lawhead drew a walk and Charles Winans doubled to left but Dominic DeFelice struck out swinging to end the game.

Winans, an arts freshman from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, led McGill with two hits in three at bats, while Mike Heffer went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Ravens.

Game 2 of the matinee doubleheader was scheduled to start at 3 p.m. McGill will send Sam Greene to the mound as the Redmen (2-1) will attempt to start a new win streak. Carleton (2-0) will go with starter Troy Clarke on the hill.
