MONTREAL -- Rookie
Nicolas Poulin potted a pair of goals and goaltender
Louis-Philip Guindon posted a 10-save shutout as the McGill men's hockey team pounded the Royal Military College Paladins 7-0 in non-conference play, Friday, at McConnell Arena.
It was the first win in four preseason attempts for the Redmen (1-3), who will officially begin their 143rd season against bitter rivals Queen's and UQTR, next weekend.
Despite being an exhibition game, it was a testy affair that featured a combined 32 penalties-- all of them minors -- split evenly between the two combatants. That marked the highest preseason penalty total in a McGill game in nine years, dating back to Oct. 2, 2009, when 34 infractions were issued in a 4-1 win over visiting Ottawa.
McGill led 3-0 after the first period, added one in the second and three more in the third.
Poulin, the son of former Montreal Canadiens forward
Patrick Poulin, is the third NHL offspring to skate for the Redmen, joining
Robert Stastny (1997-1999) and
Jan Kaminsky (2013-2018). He put McGill ahead 2-0 midway through the first period and then tallied the game's final marker at 14:21 of the third. Poulin, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound forward and management freshman from Blainville, Que., has had a good start to his McGill career with three goals and an assist in four games. He was recruited out of the QMJHL, where he posted a 71-59-130 record in 214 regular season games with Sherbrooke.
McGill had a lopsided 43-10 edge in shots as Guindon, a kinesiology junior from St. Joseph du Lac, Que., registered the easiest of his five career goose eggs in 64 career contests with the Redmen.
Other McGill marksmen included junior
Jasmin Boutet, sophomores
Michael Cramarossa and
Keanu Yamamoto, senior
Jerome Verrier (shorthanded) and
Aaron Armstrong, a first-year transfer from Ryerson, where he played for three seasons.
RMC starting netminder
Brad Van Schubert was peppered with 28 shots in two periods, conceding four goals and taking the loss, before being relieved by
Michael Desgroseillers, who gave up three goals on 15 shots.
McGill was without the services of sophomore
Nikolas Brouillard, a former pro rearguard from the ECHL, who was shaken up in last Wednesday's game at Trois-Rivieres. Despite his absence, the Redmen went 2-for-8 on the power-play and successfully snuffed out all eight shorthanded scenarios.
McGill, the defending Queen's Cup league champions, now turns their focus on their OUA regular season opener against Queen's and UQTR, Oct. 5-6, respectively. Both games are slated for a 7 p.m. puck drop at McConnell Arena.
