COTE ST. LUC, QUE --
Sasha Lagarde of Pierrefonds, Que., hit an RBI double in extra innings as McGill rallied from a three-run deficit to walk off in dramatic fashion with a 4-3 victory over Concordia, Thursday, in Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association play at Gary Carter Field.
With the teams knotted at 3-3 and McGill batting in the bottom of the eighth, senior
Camden Lawhead of Lakewood, Col., drew a one-out walk, followed by a single to right by
Domenic Defilice, a junior from Richmond, Mass.
Then Lagarde, a six-foot, 220-pound centrefielder, connected on a 3-1 pitch, hitting it in the left-field power alley, to cash Lawhead with the winning run. Lagarde, a junior majoring in teaching English as a second language, went 2-for-4 at the plate, drew a walk and scored a run, to lead the Redmen offensively.
The Stingers had opened the scoring with a three-run effort in the top of the fourth -- on RBI hits from
Shane Laverty and
Dazio Vincelli -- but McGill came from behind with three of their own in the bottom of the fifth sparked by
Michael O'Toole, a freshman from Vancouver, B.C., who singled on a 3-2 count, which pushed two runs across the plate. O'Toole, a 5-foot-10, 190-pound infielder who leads the team with 14 RBIs in 13 league games, came around to score on an RBI-single by
Emerson Dohm.
Andre Lagarde, Sasha's twin brother, collected the win in relief. He pitched two-thirds of an inning, walked a pair and struck out two.
Zach Finkelstein started the game for McGill. He allowed three hits and three unearned runs over 3.2 innings, walking five and striking out five.
Cole Millinger also threw 1.2 innings in relief out of the bullpen.
For Concordia,
Sami Brochu took the loss in relief.
Tyler Havlena, who started, surrendered three unearned runs on three hits over 4.2 innings, while walking four, hitting one and striking out six.
McGill , which leads the CCBA Northern Division with a 10-3 record, will host last-place Ottawa (3-10) in a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 12 noon. The Gee-Gees handed McGill one of their three losses this season with a 6-2 decision on Sept. 9.
The Redmen will then head across the border for the third time this season for a Sunday doubleheader in Glens Falls, N.Y. They are slated to play Hudson Valley Community College in the opener, followed by Adirondack Community College in the nightcap.
