MONTREAL -- Three players came off the bench to score in the final 20 minutes as the McGill University men's soccer team came away with a key 3-1 road victory at Concordia, Sunday.
It was the McGill's third consecutive win over the Stingers since a 1-0 loss on Oct. 30, 2016, which knocked the Redmen out of a playoff berth.
The game featured 30 fouls, 19 by Concordia, which was assessed a pair of yellow cards. It was a scoreless affair until the 70th minute of play, followed by a wild four-goal flurry in a 14-minute span.
Dalin Saheb, a software engineering sophomore from Algeria, broke the ice in the 70th minute. Teammate
Florian Bettelli, a mathematics and computer science freshman from the French Alps, made it 2-0 some 11 minutes later with what proved to be the game-winning tally. But it just took 45 seconds for the Stingers to get back in the game when
Stijn Kruidenier narrowed the gap to one.
Michael Makepeace, a political science junior from England, put the contest out of reach with an insurance marker in the 84th minute.
"It was a good win for the team and gave us a four-point cushion with the teams behind us in the standings," said
Marc Mounicot, in his fifth season as head coach of the team he once captained to a national championship in 1997. "The first 45 minutes were good defensively for us but our offensive structure was poor. We started three freshmen on the back four and they were solid all game long. We changed our offensive structure in the second half and the entire unit connected better with technical execution that led to three goals."
Sophomore goalkeeper
Theo Farineau registered six saves for the victory, while losing 'keeper
Karl Gouabé was credited with eight saves.
McGill (2-2-2) will now focus on beating the undefeated Montreal Carabins, who lead the RSEQ conference with an unblemished 5-0-0 record. The match-up is slated for Stade CEPSUM on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 8:15 p.m. The Carabins won 2-0 in their earlier rendezvous, played at Molson Stadium on Aug. 31.
"Nobody expects us to upset UdeM," said Mounicot. "So we will have no pressure except the expectation to compete hard as we did when we played them four weeks ago."
Concordia (1-4-1), which now sits four points behind fourth-place McGill (2-2-2) for the fourth and final playoff berth, plays at UQTR (1-4-1) on the same night.
