MONTREAL -- Defender Nathalie Brunelle of Montreal scored once and added a helper as the McGill women's soccer team tripled visiting Bishop's 3-1 on a rain-drenched pitch at Percival Molson Stadium, Friday. The game was played under monsoon-like conditions -- remnants of a tornado warning that hit the Ottawa valley, west of Montreal -- in the second half.

The victory extended McGill's undefeated streak to 3-0-1 in the RSEQ conference. The Martlets sit third in the seven-team league, just one point in arrears of UQTR (4-0-2) and three back of division-leading Montreal (5-0-1).

"With the wet pitch, it was a bit more challenging to make it look pretty out there," said head coach Jose-Luis Valdes. "But we found a way to move the ball around and create a few scoring opportunities. The goal that we gave up was a miscommunication that led to a mistake. But that happens in wet conditions like we had tonight. We made some adjustments at halftime and told the team to keep it simple to minimize risk."

Brunelle, a psychology junior, opened the scoring for McGill before the game was six minutes old and added a helper on the the insurance marker by Ariane Ducharme of Notre Dame des Prairies, Que., in the 64th minute of play.

"Brunelle received the ball out on the wing, overlapped on a player, then headed down to the goal-line and beat the 'keeper on the short side," explained Valdes.

Gaiters striker Kayla Kyle knotted the score at 1-1 with an unassisted tally in the 14th minute but any hopes for an upset were dashed 13 minutes later when Tia Lore of Richmond, B.C., regained the lead for the home side with what proved to be the game-winner. Stefania Folina drew an assist on the play, which set the stage for Ducharme's goal.

The Martlets dominated with a 15-4 advantage in shots attempted and a 5-2 margin on net. Goalkeeper Sarah Dubois, a fifth-year engineering senior from Edmonton, was credited with making just one save to earn the victory. Bishop's 'keeper Mehanna Heins made two saves and took the loss.

McGill (4-1-1) plays next at Concordia (1-4-1) on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 3 p.m.
