Feisty fourth fuels fifth straight victory for baseball boys

AHUNTSIC, Que. -- McGill exploded for four runs in the fourth inning en route to a 6-2 victory over the Université de Montréal in Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association play, Tuesday, at Parc Ahuntsic.

It was the fifth straight victory for the CCBA North division-leading Redmen, including a pair of exhibition wins in Vermont last weekend .

The Redmen led 1-0 after the first inning, 5-0 after four and added one in the sixth before UdeM replied with a pair of runs in the last inning.

In the fateful fourth, Domenic DeFelice, an economics sophomore from Richmond, Mass., drew a bases-loaded walk and sophomore Troy Shepherd, a native of Boston, followed with an RBI-single to make it 3-0. Then a error by Montreal shortstop Gerrard Akkerhuis and a balk called on pitcher Ludovic Dufour contributed to an additional pair of runs to put the game out of reach at 6-0.

Nick Linton, a management junior from Ridgewood, N.J., sparked the McGill offence, going 2-for-3 with a double, one walk and a run scored.

Jacob Dugal went 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk and a run to lead UdeM.

McGill starter Shane Curran scattered five walks and four hits over five innings for the victory. The economics senior from Vancouver, B.C., threw 73 pitches, 38 for strikes and struck out two. Jack Pantalena, a senior from Easton, Conn., threw two innings in relief out of the bullpen, giving up three hits and a pair of runs (one unearned).

DuFour took the loss for Montréal. He went four innings, allowing five runs on four hits and four walks while striking out one.

McGill stole six bases during the game with Shepherd and Sasha Lagarde leading the pack of thieves at two apiece.

The division-leading Redmen, who improved to 16-5-3 overall and 8-3-0 in regular-season play, return to action on Thursday when they play second-place Concordia (4-2) in a road game at Gary Carter Field in Cote St. Luc, Que.

Montreal, which dropped to 4-7, will host Ottawa (1-7) on Sept 22.
