Michael O'Toole of Vancouver, B.C., hit a bases-loaded single in the top of the seventh inning to ignite a five-run rally as McGill cruised to a 5-1 come-from-behind victory over Concordia in Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association play at Gary Carter Field, Thursday.
O'Toole went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks, two RBIs and a run scored as McGill extended their win streak to six, including a pair of non-conference victories.
The Redmen, who outhit Concordia by 9-3 margin, conceded a one-run lead in the sixth inning, setting the stage for the comeback.
With the Stingers leading 1-0, McGill loaded the bases in the top of the seventh on a walk (
Troy Shepherd), a hit batsman (
Jared Kersh) and a single to left by pinch-hitter
Dominic DeFelice.
O'Toole then stroked his two-run single and
Chester Dixon cashed another on a sacrifice fly to left. That was followed by a
Jake Guggenheimer RBI single, a
Jonathan Duforest single and an RBI single by
Charles Winans, who was the team's only multi-hit player, collecting two hits in four at bats.
McGill starter
Zach Finkelstein collected the win, allowing three hits and one run over six innings. He struck out five and walked one.
Andre Lagarde threw one perfect inning of hitless relief out of the bullpen, striking out a pair.
Concordia starter
Sam Blondeau allowed no runs over five innings, giving up four hits and striking out three.
Samuel Blier took the loss in relief. He went 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on no hits and striking out three.
Tyler Havlena went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Concordia offensively.
McGill, which leads the CCBA Northern Division, is 9-3 in league play and 17-5-3 overall. They will head back across the border this weekend for a doubleheader against Monroe College on Saturday in New Rochelle, N.Y., followed by another twin-bill on Sunday against Bryant & Stratton College in Schenectady, N.Y.
