No.3 ranked Carabins blank soccer Redmen in cross-town clash

MONTREAL -- Goalkeeper Felix Goulet of St. Jean, Que., posted a three-save shutout including a penalty-kick, to merit player-of-the-game honours as the No.3-ranked Montreal Carabins blanked McGill 2-0 in men's soccer action at Percival Molson Stadium, Friday.

It extended McGill's winless streak against the Carabins to 0-7-2 since a 2-1 victory on Sept. 21, 2014.

Zakaria Messoudi opened the scoring with what proved to be in the winning tally in just the fifth minute of play. Teammate Pierre Lamothe added an insurance marker in the 60th minute.

"Although I am not happy with a loss, I was pleased with our overall performance against a top team," said Redmen head coach Marc Mounicot. "We could have easily been tied with them but failed to capitalize on our chances, including a missed penalty kick when their goalkeeper made a great save. They were stronger in the first 45 minutes but after making a tactical change at halftime, we reacted well and played with much better quality in the second half. We have something to build on after that game but now we need a win for our overall confidence."

Redmen 'keeper Cristiano Rossi, an 18-year-old arts freshman from Nobelton, Ont., merited his first regular season start and kicked aside four of six shots but was saddled with the loss. he was replaced in the 63rd minute of play by sophomore Theo Farineau, who saved the only shot he faced the rest of the way.

McGill, which dropped to 0-1-1, will look for their first win of the campaign when they head across town to confront undefeated UQAM (2-0), which is tied atop the RSEQ standings, on Sept. 7 at 8:15 p.m. They share the division lead with the Carabins (2-0-0), who get a bye week before playing at Concordia (0-1-1) on Sept. 14.
