MONTREAL – Each Wednesday for a six-week period beginning in mid-June, we will profile one of our 2018 inductees to the McGill Sports Hall of Fame. This week, meet
Dr. Adam Mar, a two-time all-Canadian soccer defender from Pte. Claire, Que.
Born Feb. 15, 1971, Mar honed his soccer skills with the West Island Lakers, a prominent program in Montreal's West Island region and went on to serve as team captain at John Rennie high school. He was later educated at John Abbott College before earning a science degree from McGill in 1995, majoring in neurology. An Academic All-Canadian and member of the Principal's Student-athlete Honour Roll, Mar then continued his studies in neuroscience at McGill, then embarked on a seven-year post-doctoral stint at the University of Cambridge before completing a PhD from McGill in 2010.
He is currently an assistant professor at the New York University School of Medicine in New York City.
On the soccer field, the 5-foot-11, 145-pound defender played five seasons for the Redmen from 1991-92 to 1995-96 under three different coaches (Pat Raimondo, Valerio Gazzola & Claudio Sandrin). He then served nine years on the Redmen coaching staff, including four seasons as head coach from 2001 to 2004. He achieved his national coaching certification and also coached three years with the Lac St. Louis program on the West Island.
During his playing career at McGill, Mar merited all-conference honours five times, twice on the first team. He was also a two-time CIAU All-Canadian, making the second squad in both 1992 and 1995. He served his final four years with the Redmen as a co-captain and received the Bill Searles Trophy in 1995 as Team MVP.
During his time as an assistant coach at McGill, the team captured four Quebec championships (1996, 1997, 1999, 2000) and one national championship (1997). As a head coach, Mar posted a 24-14-14 record (.596) in regular season play, winning the league championship in 2002 and leading the Redmen to appearances at the Nationals in 2002 and 2004, where they won bronze and silver, respectively.

Doug Vandor and soccer All-Canadian
