Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Matthew McCarthey

McGill's Matte De Grasse masterful as volleyballers rally to sink Sherbrooke succinctly

MONTREAL -- Emilie Matte De Grasse of Montreal scored a game-high 20 points and was one of five Martlets to reach double digits as No.8 ranked McGill rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat the Sherbrooke Vert & Or  3-2 in RSEQ women's volleyball at Love Competition Hall, Friday.

The set scores were 20-25, 24-26, 25-15, 25-14 and 15-12 in a contest that took two hours and four minutes to play.

The victory improved McGill's record to 6-1 and they surpassed Montreal (5-1) atop the RSEQ conference standings, while the winless Vert & Or tumbled to 0-6.

"It was a tough start but as the game went on, we started to play with more togetherness and confidence," said head coach Rachele Beliveau. "They showed us a different look than when we played them in Sherbrooke last week and it took a while to adjust. I switched the lineup a little in the third set and we made some (technical) adjustments and eventually regained the momentum."

Matte De Grasse, a 5-foot-10 power-hitter,  registered her points on 17 kills, one ace and a pair of stuff blocks. The fifth-year education senior also contributed 15 digs on defence and was credited with one assist.

"Emilie trained very hard over the summer, she plays like a player who has experience and confidence," noted Béliveau. "She is quick and jumps high."

Mila Krunic, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker from Oakville, Ont., recorded 13 points on seven kills, a pair of aces and four blocks in addition to two digs. Teammate Rowan Fletcher, an occupational therapy junior, tallied 12 points on seven kills, three aces and two blocks. She also posted 10 digs and a team-leading 2.5 passing ratio out of 3.

"Fletcher and Krunic had great games. It may not show statistically but they both served so well in the third fourth and fifth," said Béliveau. "They stayed at the serving position for a long time and it helped with the momentum."

Other leading scorers for McGill were junior Claire Vercheval (13.5) and freshman Charlene Robitaille (11.5).

Sherbrooke had four players in double figures, led by Maude Freschette with 15, followed by Veronique David (12), Rose Brazeau (11.5) and Catherine Deslauriers.

The Martlets held a 56-46 advantage in kills, a 10-7 edge in service aces and a 72-71 margin in digs. Both teams had 11 stuff blocks.

Each returns to the court on Sunday, Nov. 11, when Sherbrooke (0-6) plays host to Montreal (5-1), while McGill (6-1) hosts winless Ottawa (0-4) at Love Competition Hall, with tip-off slated for 1 p.m.
