MONTREAL -- Power-hitters
Emilie Matte De Grasse and
Claire Vercheval each tallied 10 points as McGill swept the visiting Ottawa Gee-Gees 25-20, 25-22, 25-22 in RSEQ women's volleyball at Love Competition Hall, Sunday.
Despite the straight set victory, Ottawa had a slight advantage in kills (17-12), service aces (8-5) and digs (38-36). Both sides had seven blocks.
Matte De Grasse, a fifth-year physical education senior from Montreal, matched a game-high with 10 kills to go along with four digs. Vercheval , a PhysEd junior, had seven kills, a pair of aces, one stuff block and three digs.
The Martlets offered a very balanced attack, with
Mila Krunic (7.5 pts),
Charlene Robitaille (7) and
Rowan Fletcher (7).
"We were able to spread the ball more on offence as all of our hitters were in position to handle the ball more and we didn't have to rely only on one or two players," said McGill head coach
Rachele Beliveau. "That was beneficial because it makes it tougher to play us as most teams prepare their defences around two hitters."
Setter
Andreanne Tremblay, a science sophomore from Longueuil, Que., racked up a lofty 30 assists in just three sets and added seven digs, three kills, two aces and an assisted block.
Clare Nishikawa, a kinesiology senior from Ottawa whose brother played for the basketball Redmen, came off the bench to contribute four digs and a pair of kills in limited court time.
"Clare made a big impact when she came off the bench in the third set," noted Béliveau. "We were behind 19-16 and came back to win (25-22). She was able to dig so many balls on the back line and didn't have to move up to the front lone. She really gave us that third set. Having someone like that is important because everyone needs to have a specialized role that contributes to the team."
Pacing the Gee-Gees attack was
Kara Hayes with a dozen points and
Tristan Peterson (10.5 pts), while
Caroline LeMay and
Dana Bulloch had nine apiece.
Cellar-dwelling Ottawa dropped to 0-6 and will look to turn their fortunes around on Nov. 17 when they travel to fifth-place Sherbrooke (1-6). McGill, which leads the conference at 7-1, will host third-place Laval (4-2) on Nov. 18 in a 1 p.m. tip-off.
