QUEBEC CITY --
Maud Chapleau of St. Thomas, Que., tallied a game-high 19.5 points as 10-ranked Laval swept No.6 McGill 3-0 in RSEQ women's volleyball at Centre PEPS, Sunday. The set scores were 25-20, 25-17 and 25-21.
It was the first setback of the season for division-leading McGill, which dropped to 5-1 and now has to share the top spot with the Rouge et Or (4-1).
"Laval played very well, the best they've played this year," said McGill head coach
Rachele Beliveau. "We didn't make many mistakes and neither did they, but they had more kills."
Laval had a 48-34 margin in kills, while the Martlets held a 65-58 advantage in digs and a 6-3 edge in stuff blocks.
"We are on the same level, two good teams that can control the ball," added Beliveau of the back-and-forth affair that took an hour and 20 minutes to play. "We have a good team but need to learn to be relaxed and not put too much pressure on ourselves."
Chapleau, a 5-foot-9 attacker, earned her points with 18 kills, 13 digs and a pair of assists. Teammate
Marianne St-Aubin registered nine kills and 11 digs, while
Noemie Daigneault recorded eight and seven, respectively.
McGill was led by
Emilie Matte de Grasse of Montreal who scored 10 points and 14 digs.
Claire Vercheval of Ste. Julie, Que., had eight points and a pair of digs, while teammate
Charlene Robitaille contributed a half-dozen kills and
Mila Krunic added three.
"We needed to be patient, as the game went on we started to be hesitant and we need to be a bit more intense," Beliveau offered. "There are no easy games in our league and we are going to have a big fight on our hands with teams like Laval this year."
Both teams return to the court on Nov. 9, with Laval (4-1) battling Montreal (4-1) at the centre CEPSUM, while McGill (5-1) hosts winless Sherbrooke (0-5) at Love Competition Hall, with tip-off slated for 6:30 p.m.
