ST. CATHARINES, ONT. --
Craig McCullogh, a 23-year-old medical student from Westmount, Que., produced McGill's best result at the Canadian University Rowing Association championships, hosted over the weekend by Brock University at the Royal Henley course on Henley Island, Ont.
The UBC Thunderbirds rowing program swept both the men's and women's team titles.
McCullogh just missed the podium with a fourth-place finish in the men's single sculls. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound senior completed the 2000-metre race in seven minutes, 34.12 seconds. The boat from Queen's won gold in 7:17.37, followed by Laurentian (7:23.80) and Victoria (7:29.11).
The only other member of the McGill crew to qualify for the medal round (i.e. the A final) was
Marilyse Dubois, a 23-year-old native of Laval, Que., who guided the women's single to a sixth-place finish, posting a time of 8:22.12. A transfer from Western -- where she helped lead the Mustangs to the 2017 OUA title and a national championship -- Dubois is studying kindergarten and elementary education at McGill.
UBC won the men's competition for the third straight time and the fourth in five years. It is the school's fifth title overall (2018, 2017, 2016, 2014, 2005). The T-Birds finished with 100 points, 14 more than Western, and 18 more than Victoria.
Improving on their third-place finish in 2017, the Thunderbirds won the CURA women's banner to add to the national title they won in 2004.
Among the major award recipients was
Alex Bernst of Queen's and
Laura Court, a coxswain from Brock University, who were named, respectively, as the male and female athletes of the year. UBC's
Mike Pearce was named as the men's coach of the year. On the women's side, the coaching award was shared by UBC's
Craig Pond and Guelph's
Mike Alcorn. Finally,
Peter Somerwil from Brock was given the President's Award, which is for outstanding contributions to the sport of rowing.
