Poor start costly as Martlets stumble to No.4 ranked Stingers in college hoops

MONTREAL -- Myriam Leclerc of St. Roch de Richelieu, Que., scored a game-high 24 points as No. 4 Concordia defeated McGill 77-63 in RSEQ women's basketball before a noisy crowd of 546 at Love Competition Hall, Thursday.

The Stingers improved their lifetime record to 63-64 over McGill since 1981.

Concordia led 26-17 after the first quarter and had a 46-23 advantage at halftime. McGill fought back in the third and fourth quarters, winning 19-13 and 21-18, respectively.

"It was poor performance, we didn't play well, we didn't start well," said Martlet head coach Ryan Thorne. "We had a defensive strategy and we couldn't follow it and couldn't communicate through it, so they got open opportunities. I think they just wanted to win (more), there is a reason they are fourth in the country, they really wanted to beat us."

Leclerc shot 9-for-20 from the field, including 4-for-9 from beyond the arc, and went 2-for-2 on free-throws. She also pulled down five rebounds, had four assists and stole four balls.

Concordia shooting guard Caroline Task scored 15 points, including an impressive 6-7 from the free-throw line, while teammate Coralie Dumont registered a "double-double" with 15 points and 15 rebounds.

Gladys Hakizimana of Montreal, Que., led the Martlets with a team-high 17 points, five assists and three rebounds. The 5-foot-7 guard shot 7-for-16 from the field. Sirah Diarra of Longueuil, Que., also registered double-digits in scoring, with 15 points. The 6-foot-1 NCAA transfer from Clemson University shot 7-for-11 from the field, drained her only free-throw and grabbed six rebounds along with an assist. Geraldine Cabillo-Abante, a 5-foot-5 guard from St Laurent, Que., contributed 11 points and went 5-for-13 from the field.

McGill had a 5-2 margin in blocks and a favorable 15-14 advantage in turnovers, while the Stingers held a 38-31 difference in rebounds and a 9-6 edge in steals.

Concordia shot 44.4 per cent from the field (28/63), 37.5 from downtown (9/23) and was 12-for-17 on free-throws. The Martlets shot 39.4 per cent from the field (26/66), 26.7 from beyond the arc (8/30) and 33.3 from the line (3/9).

The matchup marked the fourth annual Pots and Pans game, presented by FTQ, where fans are encouraged to bring a pot/pan and bang them together to make noise. "It was a great crowd to play against and you want to play in front of that crowd" noted coach Thorne. "We were very appreciative of the crowd we played in front of and all the fans that cheered, we-we're just disappointed that we couldn't give them more to cheer about."

As part of McGill's partnership with the Fonds de solidarité FTQ -- a Québec development capital organization whose overriding mission is to invest in local businesses to further economic development -- the halftime show featured a free-throw contest from centre court with a $10,000 prize up for grabs. One lucky contestant was given two throws but came up short on both attempts.

The Stingers, who moved into a tie with McGill for second place in the Quebec conference with a 2-1 record, will host fourth-place Bishop's (1-2) on Saturday, Nov. 24. The Martlets (2-2) have a one-week bye until their next game when they visit Bishop's on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 6 p.m.
