Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Earl Zukerman

Ravens rally to overtake hockey Redmen in overtime thriller

MONTREAL -- Rookie forward Jacob Smith scored twice, including the game-winner at 2:45 of overtime, as visiting Carleton rallied from a two-goal deficit with a dozen minutes remaining, to edge McGill 5-4 in OUA men's hockey, Saturday, at McConnell Arena.

Combined with Friday's 4-3 overtime loss at Concordia, it marked the first time in two years that the Redmen had suffered back-to-back losses in league play since losing 4-0 at Queen's (Nov. 26/16) and 1-0  in overtime vs. Ryerson (Dec. 2/16).

It was the third straight win for the Ravens (8-2-3), who upset division-leading Ottawa 4-3 in a shootout on Friday, and now sit two points ahead of fourth-place McGill (7-3-3).

Carleton, which went 0-for-8 on the power-play, outshot the Redmen 43-28, including a 19-4 margin in the third period. McGill was 2-for-6 with the man-advantage.

The home side led 3-2 after a wide-open first period that featured four goals before the game was six minutes old.

McGill marksmen were Michael Cramarossa, Guillaume Gauthier and Samuel Tremblay. Replying for the Ravens was defenceman Darian Skeoch and forward Alexandre Boivin, who notched his league-leading ninth of the season, shorthanded, to tie the game 2-2 at 5:29.

The teams settled down through a scoreless second stanza. In the third period, McGill defenceman Nikolas Brouillard, just back from a league-imposed two-game suspension, put the Redmen ahead 4-2 with a howitzer on the power-play at 6:41. It was his team-leading eighth goal of the season, tops among all blueliners across the nation.

Smith, who played in both the QMJHL (Val d'Or) and the OHL (Windsor), sparked the comeback with his first goal of the soiree at 8:34 of the third period, narrowing the gap to 4-3. Teammate Christian Blacksmith forced overtime when he connected at 18:19, just as the Ravens were in the process of pulling goaltender Francois Brassard for an extra attacker. The third-year veteran made 24 saves to collect the win, improving to 7-2 on the season.

Louis-Philippe Guindon made 38 saves in a losing cause, as his record fell to 7-5.

McGill (7-3-3) now faces a grueling four-day bus trip to Northern Ontario. They will play Laurentian (5-7-0) in Sudbury on Nov. 23 before confronting Nipissing (3-9-0) in North Bay on Nov. 24. Both games are slated for 7:30 pm starts and are expected to be streamed for free on OUA-TV.

The Ravens (8-2-3) will host division-leading Ottawa (10-0-2) and UQTR (7-5-1) on Nov. 23-24, respectively.

REDMEN RAP: Sophomore Keanu Yamamoto collected three assists and now has 10 points in 13 contests... McGill's penalty-killing unit has snuffed out 21 consecutive infractions... The PK squad is now ranked fifth in the 20-team OUA with an 86.4 per cent success rate, erasing 51 of 59 situations... They also have three shorthanded goals, which ranks second-best in the OUA.... On the other side, the power-play has finally moved out of the doldrums with a 7-for-24 efficiency over their last four games... They have moved from 19th place to 11th in the league with a 17.1 efficiency.
