Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Earl Zukerman

McGill mining expedition to Sudbury pays dividends for hockey Redmen

SUDBURY, Ont. -- Defenceman Nikolas Brouillard of St. Hilaire, Que., scored the game-winner and added a helper as McGill tallied four unanswered goals en route to a 4-1 victory over Laurentian University in OUA men's hockey at Countryside Arena, Friday.

It was McGill's 12th consecutive victory over the Voyageurs since a 5-2 home-ice loss on Oct. 18, 2014. The Redmen are now 23-5-2 in 30 lifetime meetings, including a 9-2-2 mark in this mining town known for nickel production, since the series was initiated in 1988.

Luke McCaw, a sophomore from Toronto who was suiting up for the first time this season, had given Laurentian a 1-0 lead with the only goal of the opening period. But McGill replied with two in the second and two more in the final stanza.

Four minutes after Christophe Lalonde of Mirabel, Que., tied the game at 1-1 on a power-play at 3:19 of the middle period, Brouillard put McGill ahead for good. The 5-foot-11, 168-pound, physical education sophomore now leads all rearguards across the nation with nine goals in 12 games. The McGill single-season record for blueliners is 16 by Samuel Labrecque in 2015-16.

A pair of sophomores rounded out the scoring in the third period, with Samuel Tremblay netting a shorthanded marker at 12:06, then assisting on Antoine Dufort-Plante's goal three minutes later.

McGill has now tallied four shorties this season and share the league lead with UQTR. The Redmen penalty-killing unit erased all five Laurentian PP chances and is now operating at 87.5 per cent efficiency, which ranks fourth in the 20-team OUA. The power-play unit was 1-for-5. After connecting just five times in their first nine games, McGill now has eight PPGs in their last five contests, moving from 20th place to 10th in the league with a success rate of 17.3 per cent.

The Redmen had a 42-27 edge in shots as goaltender Louis-Philippe Guindon made 26 saves for the victory, improving his record to 8-5 on the season. The 6-foot-1 junior from St. Joseph du Lac, Que., ranks third among 33 OUA goalies in wins, second in minutes played (800:16), sixth in goals-against average (2.32) and 10th in save percentage (.920).

Sophomore Mackenzie Savard made 38 saves in a losing cause as his record dropped to 0-5.

On Saturday evening, Laurentian (5-8-0) will host Concordia (6-6-1), while McGill (8-3-3) heads to North Bay, Ont., to play Nipissing (3-10-0) in a 7:30 p.m. start that is slated to be webcast on OUA-TV.
