Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Earl Zukerman

Poulin's prolific performance proves pointless as Stingers edge McGill in OTS thriller

MONTREAL -- Freshman Nicolas Poulin of Blainville, Que., scored twice, assisted on another and netted a shootout marker in a losing effort as McGill fell 4-3 to Concordia in an OUA men's hockey overtime thriller at the Ed Meagher Arena, Friday. Hugo Roy of Cookshire, Que., tallied the go-ahead goal in the shootout session which ended 2-1 in the Stingers favour.

The result halted a three-game losing streak for Concordia (5-5-1) and resulted in their centennial lifetime victory over McGill as they improved their all-time record to 100-104-14 in 218 confrontations in the cross-town rivalry, which began in 1975.

McGill (7-3-2) dominated most of the game, outshooting Concordia 36-22 but it was the Stingers who led most of the way. The hosts took a 1-0 first period lead and that held up until the final moments of the middle stanza until McGill rallied with two goals in 122 seconds, to take a 2-1 advantage into the third period.

Concordia then struck twice in the first 10 minutes to go ahead 3-2 but McGill forced overtime when sophomore Keanu Yamamoto of Spokane, Wash., redirected a slapshot from Poulin with just 10 seconds remaining in regulation on a power-play goal with the goaltender pulled for a 6-on-4 advantage. After a scoreless five-minute 3-on-3 overtime, Concordia won the penalty-shot session 2-1, with goals from Philippe Sanche and Hugo Roy.

Poulin, a product of the QMJHL's Sherbrooke Phoenix and the son of former Habs forward Patrick Poulin, erased Concordia's 2-1 lead with markers at 17:24 and 19:26 of the middle period. He missed out on two other glorious opportunities, then fired a howitzer that was deflected for the tying marker with 10 seconds left in regulation. He also potted a nifty shot under the crossbar to even the shootout session at 1-1.

"Nic had a fantastic game tonight, two quick goals, back-to-back, shooting the puck off the rush -- great buries," said Redmen head coach Kelly Nobes. "That goal late in the game to tie it up, Nic was in on it, then he goes out in the shootout and scored a beauty under pressure. Fantastic game for him."

Carl Neill opened scoring for the Stingers at 17:27 of the first. Chase Harwell and Philippe Hudon added markers for Concordia in the third at 2:56 and 10:44, respectively.

"There were parts of the game I thought we did really well, but overall not an "A" game," said Nobes. "As a team, we could be better than we were tonight."

McGill was 1-for-4 on the power-play, while the Stingers went 0-for-3.

Concordia goalie Marc-Antoine Turcotte blocked 33 of 36 shots faced for the win. Redmen netminder Louis-Philip Guindon of St. Joseph du Lac, Que., recorded 18 saves in a losing effort.

Both teams play on Saturday (Nov. 16) with Concordia (5-5-1) at Ottawa (9-0-1) and McGill (7-3-2) hosting Carleton (6-2-3) at McConnell Arena. Puck drop at 7 p.m.

REDMEN RAP: The officials only dished our seven minor penalties for 14 minutes, compared to 28 infractions for 75 PIMs in the first rendezvous between these bitter rivals last week, a 6-3 Redmen victory... McGill was without the services of four regulars, including league-imposed suspensions to defenceman Nikolas Brouillard and forward Jordan Fournier... Scratched with injuries was centre Aaron Armstrong (4th consecutive  game) and defenceman Redgie Bois (7 games).
