KINGSTON --
Antoine Dufort-Plante of Montreal., scored the game-winner with 97 seconds remaining as McGill escaped with a narrow 3-2 victory over the Royal Military College Paladins in OUA men's hockey at Constantine Arena, Saturday.
Â
It was McGill's 29th consecutive victory over the Paladins since a 2-1 loss in Kingston on Jan. 26, 2008. The Redmen improved to 71-8-4 lifetime against RMC since the long-time rivals first crossed paths in 1892. It is McGill's oldest active rivalry, followed by Queen's in 1895, another team based in Kingston, a town known for having the largest concentration of federal correctional facilities in Canada.
Â
RMC led 2-1 after the first period before McGill rallied with one goal in the second and another in the final stanza.
Team captain
Jerome Verrier of Drummondville, Que., opened the scoring for the Redmen with a power-play goal at 12:24 of the first period. But
Scott Emerson and
Liam Murray both capitalized for RMC, at 2:41 and 17:50 respectively.
Sophomore
Keanu Yamamoto of Spokane, Was., tied the game 2-2 at 17:15 of the middle stanza, setting the stage for Dufort-Plante's late heroics. The 5-foot-10, 170-pound sophomore forward netted the game-winner from the slot at 18:23 of the final period, assisted by linemates
Nicolas Poulin from St. Hubert, Que, and
Samuel Tremblay of Blainville, Que.
Â
McGill outshot their hosts 37-24 as RMC goaltender
Austin Hannaford made 34 saves in a losing cause.
Freshman
Antoine Samuel, of Lac Etchemin, Que., made his second regular season start for the Redmen, who traveled the morning after a night-game victory over Concordia. Samuel conceded two goals on 10 shots faced before being replaced after the first period by junior
Louis-Philip Guindon of Lac Etchemin, Que., who kicked aside all 14 shots to register the victory.
Â
McGill went 1-for-4 on the power-play and successfully snuffed out all five shorthanded situations.
Â
McGill improved to 7-3-1 and sit in a three-way tie for third place with UOIT (7-4-1) and Carleton (6-2-3). The Redmen, who are one point behind second-place Queen's (8-3-0) and four behind division-leading Ottawa, will play Concordia (4-5-1) on Nov. 16 at the Ed Meagher Arena, with a 7:30 p.m puck-drop. RMC (3-8-1) hosts Nipissing (5-1-1) on the same date at 7 p.m.
REDMEN RAP: McGill was without the services of defenceman
Nikolas Brouillard, the team's leading scorer, who was serving the first of an automatic two-game suspension incurred from a major penalty assessed in Friday night's win over Concordia.
