MONTREAL -- Goaltender
Louis-Philip Guindon provided all the stuffing needed for a great Thanksgiving feast as No.4 ranked McGill quadrupled the UQTR Patriotes 4-1 in OUA men's hockey at McConnell Arena, Saturday.
The result avenged a 7-3 preseason loss at Trois-Rivieres and was McGill's fifth victory in their last seven meetings with their bitter rivals, improving McGill's lifetime record to 86-159-17 in 262 meetings overall since the series began in 1969.
Guindon, a 6-foot-1, 188-pound kinesiology sophomore from St. Joseph du Lac, Que., registered 27 saves -- a number of them spectacular -- to even his record at 1-1, including Friday's disappointing 2-1 overtime setback to Queen's.
"I was happy with our response tonight after a disappointing loss on Friday night. Despite our energy level being low as a group, we played a smart game tonight (against a team on fresh legs)," said
Kelly Nobes, head coach of the Redmen. "We managed the game well and our penalty-kill was really effective."
McGill outshot the Patriotes 31-28 and went 1-for-5 on the power-play while snuffing out all six shorthanded scenarios.
The Pats, who were making their OUA season debut, looked to be a formidable foe for the first seven minutes. When Redmen rookie
Jordan Fournier was ejected for a checking-from-behind major -- a penalty that calls for an automatic two-game suspension -- it didn't look good for McGill. But something got lost in translation and it was the Redmen who suddenly stepped up their game.
"They came out hard, as we expected they would," added Nobes. "They didn't play last night and we had an emotional game (against rival Queen's). But we weathered the storm well through that beginning and then the five-mnute kill was probably the turning point in the game. It was a really big kill for us as we went on the offensive after that and took control of the game. You have to give credit to LP (Guindon) because he was a key part of the win tonight."
Less than a minute after killing off the five-minute infraction, sophomore defenceman
Nikolas Brouillard struck for a power-play goal to give McGill a 1-0 lead and perhaps more importantly, put the visitors on the back of their heels.
UQTR did manage to tie the score at 1-1 when rearguard
Allan Caron found the net at 19:10 of the opening period but McGill took control, outscoring the Pats 2-0 in the middle stanza and 1-0 in the final period.
Newcomer
Aaron Armstrong, a transfer from Ryerson, was credited with the game-winner at 12:00 of the second,
Jasmin Boutet added an insurance marker three minutes later and
Jerome Verrier, the newly-appointed team captain, potted an empty-netter in the final minute of the contest.
"We really took control in the third period. The amount of offensive opportunities that we had in the third was great, although it was too bad we couldn't finish because we needed a fourth goal (to put the game out of reach) before the empty-netter."
In a strange scheduling quirk the two teams will meet again on Friday, Oct. 12, same time, same place, as part of Homecoming Week at McGill.
