Goalie Guindon great as McGill pickles Pats in hockey showdown

MONTREAL -- Goaltender Louis-Philippe Guindon of St. Joseph du Lac, Que., turned away 38 of 40 shots leading No.5 ranked McGill to an impressive 6-2 home-ice victory over the UQTR Patriotes in OUA men's hockey, Friday, as the Redmen celebrated their annual Homecoming game.

It was McGill's second straight victory over the Pats and the sixth in their last eight meetings with their bitter rivals, improving McGill's lifetime record to 87-159-17 in 263 meetings overall since the series began in 1969.

The Redmen, who received goal production from five different players, led 2-0 after the opening frame and 3-0 after two, then outscored the Pats 3-2 in the final period.

Scoring for the home side was Keanu Yamamoto and Christophe Lalonde in the first, Guillaume Gauthier with the winner at 3:19 of the second, Antoine Dufort-Plante, Quinn Syrydiuk and defenceman Nikolas Brouillard in the final period.

UQTR, which was hemmed in their zone for much of the first two periods, finally broke loose in the third to outshoot McGill 22-8 en route to a 40-26 advantage in the game. But they could not solve Guindon, the 6-foot-1, 183-pound kinesiology junior, who lost a bid for a shutout when defenceman Loik Leveille found the back of the net with a power-play marker at 40 seconds of the third period. Leveille set up another goal five minutes later when Olivier Caouette narrowed the gap to 3-2.
