Redmen cagers pounce upon Panthers for sixth consecutive confrontation

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. -- Senior Isaiah Cummins and sophomore Levi Londole both scored a game-high of 17 points as McGill pounced on the UPEI Pathers with 69-63 at the RBC Classic men's basketball tournament, Saturday, at Bob Davis Gymnasium.

It was McGill's sixth consecutive over UPEI but their first matchup since a 73-68 overtime victory on Dec. 28, 2012.

McGill, which was without the services of injured point-guard Alex Paquin, led 23-18 after the opening quarter, 37-33 at the half and 56-47 after three. The Panthers won the final stanza 16-13.

Cummins, a 6-foot-2 point-guard who hails from Oshawa, Ont., shot 7-for-10 from the field, 1-for-3 from three-point range and went a 2-for-8 from the free-throw line. The physics and computer science senior also collected three rebounds, four assists and one steal in 23 minutes of court time.

Londole, a 6-foot-7 forward from LaSalle, Que., went 7-for-8 in field-goal shooting and 3-for-6 from the line. The second-year transfer from Northwest College saw 26 minutes of court duty and pulled down five rebounds to go along with a pair of assists, one steal and a blocked shot.

They were among three Redmen who reached double-digits, joining sophomore point-guard Sam Jenkins of Hamilton, Ont., who tallied 11 points, five rebounds and three steals.

Leading the way for the Panthers was point-guard Amin Suleman with 15 points, while teammates Adam Ryan and Jack MacAulay added 10 apiece.

McGill shot 45 per cent from the floor, 20.0 from beyond the arc and 47.6 from the line (10 of 21), compared to UPEI, which shot 41.7, 32.0 and 41.7 (5 of 12), respectively.

McGill (2-0) can win the tourney with a Sunday (2 p.m.) victory over Ryerson (1-1), which settled for silver at the nationals last year, where they lost a 79-77 heartbreaker to Calgary in the final.
