Ryerson plays Ram tough against Redmen hoops squad

ST. CATHARINES, Ont. -- Jean-Victor Mukama of Hamilton, Ont., recorded a "double-double" as Ryerson overwhelmed McGill 73-43 to conclude the RBC Classic men's basketball tournament, Sunday, at Bob Davis Gymnasium.

The Redmen were missing injured Alex Paquin, their scoring leader, for the second straight game. It was the lowest offensive output by McGill since a 65-43 setback against Calgary, the eventual national champs, at the U SPORTS Final Eight tournament on Mar. 10, 2018. Ryerson, which lost to Calgary in the gold medal game last spring, has now won three consecutive decisions over McGill, including a 69-66 pre-season victory in their previous matchup on Oct. 4, 2015.

McGill led 14-11 after an impressive opening stanza but Ryerson outscored them 24-8, 17-11 and 21-10 over the final three quarters.

Mukama, a six-foot-eight guard, shot 7-for-11 from the field, 1-for-5 from three-point range and went 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. The senior tallied 20 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and four steals in 30 minutes of court time.

Two other Rams players reached double-digits in points: Jayden Frederick (12) and Yusuf Ali (11).

JJ Hamel-Carey, a 6-foot-1 point-guard from Montreal North, registered 17 points and two rebounds for McGill. The physical education sophomore shot 6-for-12 from the floor, including a 4-for-8 performance from downtown. He added one assist and a steal.

Teammate Levi Londole, a sophomore from LaSalle, Que., added nine points, retrieved seven rebounds and went 4-for-5 from the field. Sam Jenkins, another sophomore, who hails from Hamilton, Ont., added six points. Six other Redmen made the scoresheet, none with more than two points.

Ryerson, which had a 40-33 edge in rebounds, went to the foul-line 18 times and came away with 14 points, compared to the Redmen who went 4-for-7 from the line.

The Rams shot 45.9 per cent from the floor (28/61) and went 3-for-21 from three-point range. McGill shot 29.8 (17/57) and drained 5-of-19 from long range.

McGill, which is 2-6 overall and 2-1 against Canadian opponents, will continue their extended preseason schedule on Oct. 20-21 when they host Ottawa (1-0) and Saint Mary's (1-2) at Love Competition Hall. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
