Ravens clip Martlets wings in college hoops


OTTAWA, Ont. --  Alyssa Cerino, a senior forward from Stoney Creek, Ont,. recorded a "double-double" as Carleton University edged McGill 52-49 in women's preseason basketball at the Ravens' Nest, Friday.
 
The game was a rematch of last spring's U SPORTS national semifinal, which the Ravens won 46-44 en route to capturing their first-ever national title. The defending champs are currently on a five game pre-season win streak, while the Martlets have now dropped their first three contests.
 
Carleton led 21-17 after the opening quarter before the defence kicked in. The Ravens won the second quarter 8-7 and McGill took the third 14-11. Carleton prevailed 12-11 in the final stanza.
 
Cerino, a six-foot sociology major, tallied 14 points, 10 rebounds and two steals in 33 minutes on the court.
 
Montrealer Ruth Tshikudi-Tshila, a six-foot forward, led the Martlets with 10 points, four rebounds, two assists and a block in 32 minutes of action. The physical education junior shot 5-for-14 from the field.

Teammates Geraldine Cabillo-Abante of St. Laurent, Que., and Stephanie Mondou of Sorel, Que., each added nine points .
 
The Ravens shot 36.2 per cent from the floor (21/58), 20.8 from beyond the arc (5/24) and 33.3 from the free-throw line (5 /15) compared to McGill which shot 31.1 (19/61), drained six of 22 treys and made five of seven attempts from the line.
 
Carleton (5-0) will host Concordia (4-1) on Oct. 19 at 8.p.m.

McGill (0-3) will host their annual Redbird Classic tournament next weekend. They are scheduled to confront the UBC-Okanagan Heat (1-0) on Fri, Oct. 19 at 7.p.m. and Ryerson (1-4) on Saturday at 5 p.m.

The Heat will also play Bishop's (1-0) on Saturday at 12 noon and Ryerson on Sunday at 9 a.m. All games are slated for Love Competition Hall, inside the Currie gymnasium.
