Charlotte Clayton a sophomore guard from Newmarket, Ont., scored a game-high 25 points as McGill ended a three-game slump with a 96-51 victory over visiting UBC Okanagan at the McGill Redbird Classic women's basketball tournament, Friday, at Love Competition Hall.
It was the first-ever matchup between the schools and although record are incomplete, appears to be McGill's highest single-game offensive output in a women's game since a lopsided 108-8 victory over Sir George Williams University in 1973.
McGill led 26-15 after the opening quarter and 53-21 after half-time before the defence kicked in. The Heat won the third quarter 22-19 and McGill took the fourth 24-8.
Clayton, a five-foot-eight arts and science major, shot 9-for-19 from the floor, including a red-hot 6-for-13 effort from three-point range and was perfect on her only free-throw attempt. She added five rebounds and four steals in 23 minutes on the court.
Martlets rookie
Delphine Robitaille, a five-foot-nine transfer from University of Central Florida, scored 14 points, seven assists and made an impressive four of five from the three-point arc.
Teammates
Kamsi Ogbudibe of Calgary, Alb., and
Geraldine Cabillo-Abante of St. Laurent, Que., each added 10 points.
Jordan Korol, a five-foot-11 forward, led UBC Okanagan with 13 points, five rebounds and shot six-for-nine from the field in 24 minutes of action.
McGill shot 47.0 per cent from the floor (39/83), 43.3 from beyond the arc (13/30) and 71.4 from the free-throw line (5 /7) compared to UBCO, which shot 41.5 (22/53), drained four of 14 treys and made three of seven attempts from the line.
The other opening round game had Ryerson defeating Bishop's 56-47. The three-day tourney continues on Saturday with the Heat (1-1) playing Bishop's (1-1) at 12 noon, followed by a Ryerson (2-4) matchup with McGill at 5 p.m., at Love Competition Hall, inside the Currie gymnasium.
