Maia Timmons and
Brigitte Lefebvre scored seven points apiece as the Ottawa Gee-Gees won ugly, defeating McGill 43-40 in a low-scoring women's preseason basketball game, Thursday.
The 40 points scored by the Martlets marked their lowest offensive output in 15 games, dating back to a 52-40 setback at Bishop's on Jan. 26, 2018
Shayann Laguerre and
Trishia Villedrouin paced the Martlets with a game-high eight points apiece.
Both teams struggled offensively, with Ottawa shooting a paltry 27.6 per cent from the floor (16/58). They made only 3-of-18 treys and went 8-for-13 from the free-throw line. McGill was even worse, shooting 22.2 from the floor (14/63), 19.0 per cent from the arc (4/21) and 47.1 from the line (8/17).
The visitors led 14-11 after first quarter but it was all downhill after that. The Gee-Gees rallied to lead 22-21 at the half and took a 35-31 advantage into the final stanza, which McGill won 9-8.
McGill had a 52-43 edge in rebounding, with a game-high 13 boards from
Ruth Tshikudi-Tshila.
The Martlets dropped to 0-2 in preseason play, their worst start since 2015-16, when they they lost first two exhibition games en route to a 15-1 regular season and an RSEQ conference championship.
McGill plays at undefeated Carleton (4-0) on Friday (Oct. 5) at 6 p.m.
