MONTREAL -- Rookie goalkeeper
Chris Cinelli-Faia posted a five-save shutout leading McGill to a 3-0 victory over Concordia in RSEQ men's soccer at Percival Molson Stadium, Thursday.
It was the first career regular season start for the 5-foot-8, 160-pound acrobatic 'keeper, a 19-year-old physical education freshman from Dollard des Ormeaux, Que., who helped the Redmen snap a two-game losing skid.
The result was also the McGill's fourth consecutive win over the Stingers since a 1-0 loss on Oct. 30, 2016, which knocked the Redmen out of a playoff berth.
The testy affair between bitter cross-town rivals featured 21 fouls, seven yellow warnings and a red card to McGill defender
Max Engelbrechtsen, who was sent off after being assessed yellows in the 29th and 39th minutes.
Despite playing a man down, the Redmen turned the offence up a notch and
Ramdane Tafer, a third-year medical student from Montreal, struck for the game-winning tally late in injury time to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. In the second half,
Ramzi Saim, a sophomore midfielder from Ile-Bizard, Que., added an insurance marker in the 55th minute, converting a
Cameron Butterfield pass. Third-year striker
Michael Makepeace, a native of Brighton, England, rounded out the scoring in the 90th minute, with
Florian Bettelli drawing an assist.
Concordia, which was flagged offside six times, had a 15-12 edge in attempted shots but the shots on net were even at 5-5. Stingers goalkeeper
Abdalla Osman registered two saves and took the loss.
"It was a great team effort, we played for 60 minutes with only 10 men," said
Marc Mounicot, in his fifth season as head coach of the Redmen, "We scored on two set plays and defended well to earn our first clean sheet of the season. The team played a smart game with a lot of poise, which was very good considering we started six freshmen, including the entire back four, plus Cinelli in nets who made some nice saves as we were pressured. A very positive result that put us back in the playoff picture."
With three games remaining in the regular season, McGill (3-4-2) now sits in the fourth and final playoff berth, one point ahead of fifth-place UQTR (3-4-1), which holds a game in hand. The sixth-place Stingers dropped to 1-7-1 and sit seven points behind McGill on the verge of elimination from post-season play.
The Redmen will play next during McGill Homecoming Week, when they host second-place Laval (5-1-2) in a crucial confrontation at Molson Stadium on Friday, Oct. 12 at 8 p.m. McGill will be looking to avenge a 4-1 loss in Quebec City on Sept. 16.
Concordia, which also plays next on Oct. 12, will travel to third-place UQAM (4-1-2). A loss against the Citadins would eliminate the Stingers from playoff contention.
