MONTREAL -- Four different players scored for the top-seeded Montreal Carabins as they defeated fourth-place McGill 5-1 in an RSEQ men's soccer semifinal played in sub-zero temperatures at Stade CEPSUM, Sunday.

It extended McGill's winless streak against the Carabins to 0-9-2 since a 2-1 victory on Sept. 21, 2014.

UdeM, which finished atop the RSEQ conference with a 9-2-1 record, advances to the league championship game on Nov. 2, but are unaware of who they will host as the other semifinal game, between third-place UQAM (5-2-5) and second-seeded Laval (7-3-2), was halted in the 14th minute due to a snowstorm in Quebec City. It will be replayed on Oct. 30.

The Carabins had a decided 15-3 edge in shots on net, including the game-winner, which was an own goal mistakenly redirected into the McGill cage by defender Chris Foy.

"We had a good start in both halves and opened the scoring but for the rest of the game, Montreal had more experience all over the pitch and was the better team overall," said McGill bench boss Marc Mounicot, who was named earlier in the week as the conference's coach of the year. "They are a contender for the national title and probably had their best performances this season in the three games against us (outscoring McGill 10-1). Our only consolation is that we played on par with our ability. The Carabins are the only team who (dominated) us this season. I wish them good luck for Nationals."

All-star striker Ramzi Saim, a junior from Ile-Bizard, Que., opened the scoring for McGill with a penalty kick in the 16th minute of play. But Carabins defender Ismail Sow -- the culprit responsible for the PK call -- responded four minutes later to tie the game at 1-1. The own goal, in the 37th minute, gave the home side a 2-1 edge at halftime.

The Carabins dominated the second half, with goals from Omar Kreimr, Frédéric Lajoie-Gravelle and Zakaria Messoudi.

Starting goaltender Félix Goulet of St. Jean, Que., collected the win. He conceded one goal on two shots before giving way to under-study Samuel Dufort in the 76th minute. Dufort was called upon to make only one save during his short stint. McGill freshman Chris Cinelli-Faia from Dollard-Des-Ormeaux Que., made 10 saves in a losing cause.

The Redmen finished with a 7-6-4 record, including a 5-4-3 fourth-place finish in the seven-team Quebec conference. It was the team's first season over the .500 mark in eight years, since the 2011 campaign, when the Redmen posted a 7-3-2 record. With a differential of 18 goals for and 17 against, McGill had the second-best offence and third-best defence in the RSEQ league this year.  Only two players are expected to be lost to graduation -- midfielders Mederic Gervais and Ramzi Saim -- but both have collegiate eligibility remaining.
