KINGSTON, Ont. –
Liam MacDonald of North Vancouver, B.C., registered a hat-trick as McGill overcame a large hurdle and dominated Queen's 9-1 in a classic Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association rivalry game at Miklas-McCarney Field, Saturday.
The victory extended McGill's win streak to nine on the season and 16 consecutive regular season games, dating back to their last loss, a 12-11 triple overtime setback to Bishop's on Sept. 21, 2017.
"It was a long day, as our team bus had a flat tire en route to Kingston," said McGill head coach
Tim Murdoch, whose troops had to endure an extended six-hour bus ride before playing."We arrived three hours late, right at game time. We had no real warm up but managed to score the game's first goal and played hard."
Patrick Turner of Stouffville, Ont., netted that first goal of the game at 18:12 in the opening quarter to give McGill an early 1-0 lead.
The Redmen outscored Queen's 3-1 in the second stanza, 2-0 in the third and 3-0 in the final quarter.
MacDonald, a six-foot midfielder, scored a pair in the second quarter to put McGill ahead 3-1 heading into halftime. The 20-year-old science sophomore made it 6-1 with 9:24 left in the third to secure the hat-trick.
Angus Rawding, scored the lone Gaels marker in the second quarter, narrowing the gap to 2-1.
McGill attackman
Maxime Murdoch, from Westmount, Que., tallied a pair of goals, along with one apiece from
Andrew Chase,
Patrick Turner,
Hunter Zawada and
Seth Obadia.
The McGill game MVP, as voted by Queen's coaching staff, was starting goaltender
Michael Gallo, an architecture junior from Glen Rock, N.J., who allowed only one goal over the first three quarters. With McGill ahead by a 6-1 margin, he was relieved by
David Pelliccione of Woodbridge, Ont., who turned aside all shots faced over the final quarter.
Thomas Asma took the loss for the Gaels, conceding nine goals.
After the game, the team's beleaguered bus driver had to manoeuvre through a snowstorm to make the two-hour trek to Peterborough to prepare for the final game before playoffs, a first-place showdown between McGill (9-0) and Trent (8-1). The result will determine the CUFLA Eastern pennant.
Tip-off is scheduled for Justin Chiu Stadium at 2 p.m., Sunday.
