Rearguard Brouillard pots pair as McGill bests Western in hockey classic

LONDON, Ont. – Defenceman Nikolas Brouillard of St. Hilaire, Que., scored twice, including the game-winner with less than five minutes remaining as McGill University defeated Western 2-1 in OUA men's hockey at Thompson Arena, Saturday.

The matchup was the first meeting between these long-time rivals since Jan, 28. 2017 when the Mustangs won 5-4 in a shootout. The Redmen now hold a 19-18-3 head-to-head record against Western since their first meeting in 1936.

Brouillard, a 5-foot-11, 168-pound education major, opened the scoring at 1:42 of the second period to give McGill a 1-0 lead. But Mustang forward Kolten Olynek, responded seven minutes later to tie it up at 8:56. Capitalizing on a goaltender interference call to Olynek, Brouillard netted the power-play winner at 15:27 in the final stanza. The second-year rearguard now leads all players in the nation with seven goals in eight games.

Junior netminder Louis-Philip Guindon of St. Joseph du Lac, Que., saved 17 of 18 shots for the victory. Western's Luke Peressini made 18 saves on 20 shots and was saddled with the loss.

McGill went 1-for-6 on the power-play and was perfect on all three penalty-kills.

The Redmen (5-2-1) will play their third consecutive road game against UQTR (4-3-0) at the Le Colisée on Friday, Nov, 2. at 7 p.m.
