TROIS-RIVIÈRES --
Sebastien Auger of St. Augustin de Desmaures, Que., posted a 49-save shutout as the UQTR Patriotes survived an offensive onslaught to blank No.8 ranked McGill 2-0 in OUA men's hockey at Le Colisée, Friday.
Â
The Patriotes victory marked their second win in four games against McGill this season, with the Redmen holding a 2-1 advantage in regular season play. UQTR improved their lifetime record to 161-86-17 overall against McGill, which has taken six of last the nine meetings.
Â
The Redmen had a lopsided 49-16 edge in shots but Auger, a 5-foot-11 education major, stopped everything he faced to earn the victory. It was the first time in two years and a span of 47 games that McGill had been shutout in regular season play since suffering back-to-back whitewashes at Queen's (Nov. 26/16) and versus Ryerson (Dec. 2/16).
Â
"We controlled the whole game, every part of it but Auger played well and we just couldn't find a goal. We had 49 shots but we lacked second-chance opportunities around the blue paint -- which we needed on a night like tonight," said McGill head coach
Kelly Nobes.
Both UQTR goals were scored by defenceman.
Elie Bérubé was credited with the game-winner at 12:59 of the first period and teammate
Bruno-Carl Denis netted an insurance marker with a power-play goal at 12:37 of the middle stanza.
Nobes elected to pull goaltender
Louis-Philip Guindon for an extra attacker at 14:57 of the third period but to no avail. Guindon, a kinesiology junior from St. Joseph du Lac, Que., saved 14 of 16 shots and was charged with the loss.
Â
McGill, which ranks third among the league's 20 teams with 28 goals scored, continued to struggle on the power-play. They went 0-for-4 with the man-advantage and dropped to 17th in the league in that department, connecting on just 10.9 per cent of their 46 PP opportunities.
"We need to get a power-play goal every game and we didn't get one tonight," added Nobes. "We need to have a greater sense of urgency on the power play. We're not shooting the puck enough and need to have more of a shot mentality and right now that's not happening."
The sixth-place Patriotes (5-3-0), who went 1-for-2 on the PP, now sit one point behind fourth-place McGill (5-3-1), which sits just two points shy of division-leading Ottawa (6-0-1).
UQTR will host Concordia (4-3-0) on Saturday (Nov. 3) at 3 p.m., while the Redmen get a week to lick their wounds before playing the Stingers on Friday Nov, 9. at McConnell Arena in a 7 p.m. start.
