Division-leading volleyball Martlets stretch streak to three with road win at Sherbrooke

SHERBROOKE -- Emilie Matte De Grasse of Montreal scored a game-high 16 points as visiting McGill defeated the Sherbrooke Vert & Or  3-1 in RSEQ women's volleyball, Friday. The set scores were 25-20, 25-19, 22-25 and 25-17.

The victory improved McGill's unblemished record to 3-0 and they remained tied with Montreal (3-0) atop the RSEQ coneference standings, while the winless Vert & Or tumbled to 0-3.

"We played a good game overall," said McGill head coach Rachele Beliveau, a member of the Sherbrooke Sports Hall of Fame, who guided the Martlets to their sixth consecutive victory over her alma mater since a 3-1 Sherbrooke win on Feb. 11, 2017. "We started really well over the first two set but struggled with our focus in the third set, which opened the door for Sherbrooke to play better. However, the good thing was that we came back strong in the fourth set with our focus and execution."

Matte De Grasse, a 5-foot-10 power-hitter, registered her points on 15 kills and one ace. The fifth-year education senior also contributed 10 digs on defence and led the team in passing with a 2.44 passing ratio out of three on nine balls handled.

Other leading scorers for McGill included junior power-hitter Claire Vercheval and rookie middle blocker Charlene Robitaille.

Vercheval had 14 points, on a dozen kills and a pair of aces, to go along with nine digs. Robitaille tallied nine points on seven kills, one ace and one block. She added three digs on defence.

Andreanne Tremblay, a 5-foot-10 setter from Longueuil, Que., registered 40 assists. The occupational therapy sophomore also contributed nine kills (on 14 balls) and eight digs.

"Tremblay really used her height well at the net and scored a lot on second balls," offered Beliveau. "Instead of delivering a set ball to the hitters (on every play), she can score herself by cross-tipping."

McGill (3-0) plays at UQAM (0-1) on Sunday at 2 p.m.
