Truculent Tremblay terrific, tallies twice as Toronto toppled by McGill in OUA hockey

TORONTO -- Samuel Tremblay of St. Basile le Grand, Que., tallied twice, including the game-winner as McGill toppled Toronto 5-3 at Varsity Arena, Friday, to kick-start a lengthy road trip through southern Ontario in OUA men's hockey.

This was the 225th confrontation between the Redmen and the Varsity Blues in a rivalry that dates back to Feb. 20, 1899. McGill owns an 89-121-15 lifetime record against Toronto, including a 31-10-4 mark in the last 45 meetings.

The Redmen, who received goal production from three different players, led 3-1 after the opening frame. Toronto tied it up at 3-3 in the second and McGill dominated 2-0 in the final stanza with two late goals by Tremblay, who picked a great time to notch his first two markers of the season.

The 5-foot-11, 171-pound kinesiology major, who is known for playing a feisty game despite his size, scored the winner at 7:12 and added a shorthanded empty netter at 19:04.

Teammate Christophe Lalonde from Mirabel, Que., also netted two, both of them in the opening period, tying the score 1-1 at 13:34 and giving McGill a 3-1 lead at 19:44. Lalonde now has five goals and is tied for second among the league's goal leaders. He netted his last marker followed 67 seconds after Aaron Armstrong of Teeswater, Ont., had put the Redmen ahead 2-1 at 18:37. A grad student who transfered from Ryerson, Armstrong also added an assist and now has four goals in seven games.

Scoring for the home side was David Thompson with a pair and Joey Manchurek.

The Varsity had a 27-25 edge in shots but were thwarted by McGill netminder Louis-Philippe Guindon of St. Joseph du Lac, Que., who made 24 saves as his record improved to 4-2.

Toronto rookie 'keeper Alex Bishop conceded four markers on 24 shots as he dropped to 0-2. The Varsity Blues  (2-3-1) will host Concordia (3-3-0) on Saturday at 7 p.m.
