OTTAWA -- Game MVP
Emerson Dohm drove in five runs as top-seeded McGill routed the Saint Mary's Huskies 13-3 and advanced to the semifinal round of the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association national championship at RCGT Stadium, Saturday.
The result marked McGill's 11th consecutive victory at the Canadian university "World Series", dating back to their last loss, a 3-1 setback to Saint Mary's on Oct. 28, 2016.
The Redmen, who have won four consecutive national titles, advance to Sunday's playoff round with a perfect 3-0 record at the tournament, including 12-1 and 13-6 victories over Acadia and Concordia, respectively. They will confront a familiar foe in a sudden-death semifinal at 10 a.m., meeting fourth-seeded Carleton (2-1) in a rematch over last year's final, a 10-1 Redmen victory.
McGill, which out hit the Huskies 12-6 in the contest, also took advantage of six walks and four hit batsmen. They scored in every inning until the mercy rule was deployed after the fifth. The Redmen tallied once in the first and led 4-2 after the second. They added five more in the third, three in the fourth and once in the fifth.
Dohm, a 22-year-old economics senior from West Vancouver, B.C., went 3-for-4 at the plate. Batting from the clean-up spot, the 5-foot-11, 177-pound designated hitter drove in runs on a single in the first, a base hit in the second, another single in the third, and a groundout in the fourth.
Teammate
Sasha Lagarde continued his torrid pace with a 2-for 2 performance and a walk. The veteran centre-fielder from Pierrefonds, Que., scored three times and drove home two runs. Lagarde, the tournament MVP last season, is 6-for-8 in the tourney this year, with seven runs and seven RBIs. He has walked three times and been hit by a pitch once.
Rookie third baseman
Michael O'Toole, also a native of Vancouver, was a third multi-hit player for McGill. He batted 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs.
McGill starter
Shane Curran, also an economics senior from Vancouver, collected a complete game victory. The six-foot, 165-pound left-hander allowed three runs on six hits in his five-inning stint. He struck out five and walked four.
Six different batters had one hit apiece for the Huskies, who were eliminated from the playoff round with an 0-3 record.
SMU starter
Bailey MacDonald took the loss. He allowed five hits and four runs (two earned) over two innings, walking two, hitting one and striking out one. He was also charged with three wild pitches.
Looking ahead to Sunday's semifinal, the Redmen and Ravens have previously met seven times this season with McGill wining five. The first loss, a 5-1 result on Sept. 8, halted McGill's two-year, 30-game win streak. The other Redmen setback was a 7-3 shocker in the opening game on the best-of-three CCBA Northern Division final series on Oct. 13.
The other semifinal is slated for a 1 p.m. start featuring third-seeded UNB (2-1) against No.2 Concordia (2-1). The two teams left standing will only get a few hours of rest before playing in the gold medal game on Sunday at 6 p.m.
