OTTAWA -- Game MVP
Michael O'Toole went 2-for-3 at the plate and led McGill to 4-2 semifinal victory over Carleton to open the playoff round at the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association national championship tourney Sunday morning at RCGT Stadium.
It was the 12th consecutive victory for McGill at the Canadian University "World Series", dating back to 2016. The Redmen get a few hours of rest before meeting UNB in the gold medal game at 6 p.m. The Maritime based club walloped Concordia 8-1 in the other semi to advance.
McGill opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when
Jared Kersh hit an RBI-single on a 0-2 count but Carleton rallied with a deuce in the top of the third. That didn't faze the Redmen, who came from behind again with a pair of runs in the fourth.
Michael Gaudioso stroked an RBI-ssingle on the first pitch of his at bat and
Charles Winans drove in another with a sac fly, which cashed in the winning run.
McGill added an insurance run in the fifth.
Rocky Hroch pitched McGill to victory. He allowed two runs on two hits and five walks over four innings of work, striking out four.
Andre Lagarde threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen, recording the last nine outs to earn the save.
Troy Clarke took the loss for Carleton. He surrendered four runs on eight hits over six innings, striking out four and walking one.
