LENNOXVILLE, QUE. --
Tia Lore, a striker from Richmond, B.C., scored a rare soccer "buzzer-beater" in injury time as the McGill Martlets delivered a heart-breaker blow to Bishop's with a 1-0 whitewash in RSEQ play, at Coulter Field, Friday.
The victory clinched the fourth and final playoff berth for McGill in the eight-team Quebec conference. With one game remaining before post-season play, the Martlets sit three points behind third-place UQTR (7-1-5) and six points in front of fifth-place UQAM (5-6-2). Should McGill finish tied for third, the tie-breaker would be based on the best goal-differential since the head-to-head record is even with a pair of ties.
Lore, a 5-foot-6 defender who registered six attempted shots toward the net, scored four minutes into the add-on time. Her winning tally was assisted by midfielder
Claudia Agozzino from Montreal.
The Martlets dominated with a 34-6 advantage in shots attempted and a 15-3 margin on net. Goalkeeper
Annabelle Matysiak, a freshman from Vancouver, made three saves to earn her first regular season victory and shutout. Bishop's 'keeper
Mehanna Heins made an impressive 14 saves in a losing cause.
McGill hosts UQAM (5-6-2) on Sunday, Oct. 21 (3:30 p.m) at Percival Molson Stadium. The game will be an emotional one for seven graduating seniors who will be honoured prior to the opening kickoff at 3:30 pm. Namely,
Claudia Agozzino,
Stefania Folino,
Sarah Dubois,
Olivia Lusterio-Adler,
Sarah-Maude Bouchard-Canuel,
Sophie Barlos and
Natasha Tcheki-Jamgotchian.
Bishop's, which sits last in the league with an 0-12-1 record, the division-leading Montreal Carabins (9-0-4) at home on Sunday at 4 p.m.
