OTTAWA -- Game MVP
Sasha Lagarde of Pierrefonds, Que., scored twice and knocked in three others as McGill cruised to a 13-6 smackdown over Concordia on Day 2 of the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association championship tournament at RCGT Stadium in Coventry Road, Friday, in the nation's capital.
It was McGill's 16 straight over their cross-town rivals and their 10th consecutive victory at the Canadian university "World Series", dating back to their last loss, a 3-1 setback to Saint Mary's on Oct. 28, 2016.
The top-seeded Redmen, who had a 14-6 edge in hits and a 7-4 advantage in bases on ball, scored early and often. The tallied once in the top of the first inning, then added a pair in the third, three in the fourth and four in the fifth to jump into a 10-0 lead before Concordia could respond. The Stingers pushed across four runs in the bottom of the fifth to narrow the gap to 10-4 but McGill added three more in the sixth to put it out of reach.
Lagarde, an education junior, was one of five McGill players to produce a multi-hit performance. The six-foot, 220-pound centrefielder, went 2-for-4 from the top of the batting order, with a walk and a double. Teammate
Troy Shepherd batted second in the order and gave the Redmen a good one-two punch, going 2-for-4, with a walk, scoring twice and knocking in two others.
Rookie third baseman
Michael O'Toole continued his torrid hitting pace with a 3-for-4 effort, scoring three runs and driving in another. Catcher
Mike Gaudioso was equally impressive, going 3-for-4 with two runs and a pair of RBIs. And finally, second baseman
Domenic DeFelice finished his day by going 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
McGill starter
Thomas Mienkowski went 4.1 innings for the victory. He allowed four runs on two hits, three walks and struck out five. He was was relieved by
Jack Pantalena and
Cole Millinger.
Stefan Brady and
Josh Heffel paced the Concordia offence with two hits apiece and
Zane Monk had one hit and three RBIs.
Stingers starter
Sami Brochi also lasted 4.1 innings but conceded 10 runs (6 earned) on 10 hits. He had three walks and had one strikeout.
Concordia (2-1) bounced back later in the day to register a key 9-1 victory over Carleton (2-1). In other games, UNB (1-1) overwhelmed Saint Mary's by a lopsided 16-2 result and Carleton doubled Acadia 6-3.
Saturday's final preliminary-round schedule will pit UNB (1-1) against Saint Mary's (0-2) and McGill (2-0) meets Acadia (0-2) at 1 p.m. The semifinals and final are slated for Sunday.
