MONTREAL -- A pair of second-half goals in quick succession by midfielder
Roberto Bonalumi and defender
Davide Salvoni gave the McGill University men's soccer team a 2-0 whitewash over visiting Sherbrooke before 232 fans at the Molson Stadium opener, Friday.
It was McGill's third consecutive shutout over the Vert & Or, dating back to last season, and improved their undefeated streak versus Sherbrooke to 6-0-1 since a 4-2 setback on Oct. 6, 2013.
After a scoreless opening half, Bonalumi, a third-year MBA student from Italy, converted a pass from
Mohamed Kleit in the 64th minute. Less than two minutes later, Salvoni, a physical education senior from St. Leonard, Que., followed up with an unassisted marker.
The Redmen held a 9-0 advantage in shots toward the net and a 5-1 margin in corner kicks.
Goalkeeper
Theo Farineau, a 6-foot-2, 159-pound political science freshman from France, registered a no-save shutout for his first career victory, while Sherbrooke's
Guillaume Proulx made three saves on five shots in a losing cause.
McGill, which improved to a 1-0-1 second-place record in the RSEQ conference, will host the division-leading Montreal Carabins (2-0) on Friday, Sept. 15 at 8:15 p.m. Sherbrooke (0-2) travels to UQTR (0-1-1) the same day.
