MONTREAL -- Rookie
Victoria Sturgess of
Quakertown, Pa., scored the game-winner as McGill blanked Bishop's 2-0 in
RSEQ women's soccer at Percival
Molson Stadium on Friday.
The Martlets now hold a 20-game win streak over the Gaiters and improved to 51-0-1 overall against Bishop's since BU joined the Quebec league in 1992.
McGill maintained 67 per cent of possession, outshot its guests 21-2 overall and had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. Despite a strong first half, two early second-half goals proved the difference.
"We were in very good control but Bishop's defends very well and we just had to wear them down a bit," explained Martlets head coach
Jose-Luis Valdes. "Everything in the game plan was good, the intensity was good. Every player that went on the field, whether as a starter or as a player off the bench, everybody contributed. The intensity, the intelligence on the ball and the ball movement were maintained throughout the whole game so I was really, really happy."
The 46th-minute tally marked the first career goal for
Sturgess, a 5-foot-10 forward in her first ever start. The bioengineering freshman received the ball and turned toward her right before putting a left foot shot into the low corner.
Defender
Lisa Perrett of Vancouver capitalized on a Gaiters error to double the lead five minutes later. After a miscommunication between the Bishop's goalkeeper and a defender led to the ball popping free in the box, Perrett finished her run and had a clean shot straight into the net in the 51st minute.
McGill started three first-year players at forward:
Sturgess,
Noemie Briollais of Toronto and
Ariane Ducharme of Notre Dame des Prairies, Que.
"(We went with all rookies) due to trying to rest a few players," said Valdes. "But it was a good match-up to put those three players against Bishop's because of the physicality. We put a couple of strong kids up front, which gave us a bit of an edge there."
Sophomore 'keeper
Hannah Boshari of Toronto made two saves to earn the win in her first start of the season.
Her Bishop's counterpart,
Mehana Heins, was called upon for a massive 14 saves in a losing cause and earned player of the match honours for the Gaiters.
Centre back
Natasha Tcheki-Jamgotchian of Pierrefonds, Que., was named Game MVP for McGill.
The Martlets (2-3-2) visit Sherbrooke (2-3-2) on Sunday (Oct. 1) at 3:30 p.m. Bishop's (1-4-2) plays Concordia (1-3-3) that afternoon.
